March 7th-8th, my family and I will be traveling to Fort Leonard Wood Army base.
(4.5 hour drive for us-no big deal)

My little brother graduated the USMC about 2 months ago and is now stationed there for school. (AIT-chemical/biological warfare)

He lives in Southern California and I've only seen him twice. Once when he was 18 months old and again when he turned 6. He turns 19 the weekend we are there.

For such a young man he has accomplished a lot. He had academic schollys from various schools but choose to serve his country. He was honored by the Eagle Scouts for his remarkable achievements as well. He recieved 4 historical medals totaling 131.

I know to some this isn't a "cool story bro" but to me, it is. I will also be taking him some Vol gear. I plan on reciting him and a couple of his southern cal buddies to our beloved Big Orange.

Marines are the sharpest looking of all the branches and the most respected.

SALUTE to him!

Thanks guys. Like I said, I'm very proud of him.

My son has never meet his uncle, so he's in for a surprise. Hopefully we will get to look around the base and see the tanks and armored vehicles.

Good stuff. Minus the Ft Leonard Wood part

Thanks yankee. Have you been there? Anything in particular to see while there?

We have a base here, Ft Chaffee. But it's been locked down since 9/11 and the only way I can get in is with the father in law. (Retired army and navy)

Back in the day we could drive around the base and see the neat stuff.

Never been, and I don't ever plan to lol. I have never heard anything good or cool about that place. Typically, training (TRADOC) posts suck.

That's as cool a "Cool story bro" as there is.

I was there for 3 weeks in 89 and it was a god forsaken dump. I'm sure it's a bit better by now.

Been to Chaffee when JRTC was there, FLW was just a bigger dump.

So happy you get to see him!!! Wow, twice in 18 years? I can't imagine.

Sad isn't it. But it's very expensive to fly to southern cal from memphis. Not to mention all the extra expenses associated with traveling.

there really isn't much of anything there. But it's pretty cool. Congrats to him.

However, I just have to:

It's sad, but I'm really happy for you to get this opportunity!!

We drove from Chattanooga to San Antonio to pick up our step-son from AIT and bring him home for Christmas a few years ago. That was a long trip. When we went back for his graduation, we flew. $$ both times. Now he's at Fort Riley in Kansas and we made that drive when he came home from his last deployment. Still a long drive but nothing like San Antonio.

I was there for basic in '96. To the best of my memory, you're driving along......driving along......driving along, nothing to see.........and then you run into Fort Leonard Wood.

Well we made the trip. Got here around noon today. Had lunch and did some sight seeing.

I am really impressed with the base. It's huge. (Granted my experience is limited to Ft Chaffee and Millington) but it's neat as hell.

The MP's let us in with ease to pick up my brother and a fellow marine. (Apparently it's marine policy they travel with a buddy)

He has sure grown up. I'm very proud.

Good stuff. It's not just a Marine thing. The Army pushes battle buddy pairs, though it's not mandatory.

Hope you have a great reunion.

Thank you. We are indeed enjoying ourselves.

We are having breakfast this morning then off to get my son a haircut. (He wants a military cut to look like his uncle)

I think the funniest part is these young marines and their opinions of the other branchs of service. It cracks me up.
