importance of Croom and Downs

I broke down several of the plays where inconsistent performances resulted in issues during the game. Hopefully it shows that Worley is part of the problem, but not the only problem on offense. I listed quater, time on clock, and down/distance so you could use Freaks sticky for the you tube link to the offensive plays of the South Alabama game.

• 1st Qtr, 10:08 on clock, 2nd and 9. Receiver rounds the route allowing the defender early recognition of the route and a better angle to gain ground on the receiver. Think the receiver was Pig Howard.
• 1st Qtr, 9:57 on clock, 3rd and 9. Worley way overthrows receiver. Receiver appears to be open. Safety was closing on the route quickly, but the ball sailed over everyone. Don’t know if this was just a bad overthrow or play communication error between QB and Receiver.
• 2nd Qtr, 13:54 on clock. Worley hurries the throw on the screen play. Just a second longer to develop and probably ends up a completion.
• 2nd Qtr, 7:37 on clock. 1st and 15. Brendan Downs gets beat badly off the edge allowing Worley to be hit from behind fumbling the ball.
• 2nd Qtr, 6:53 on clock, 2nd and 20. Marlin Lane recognizes blitzing linebacker, but allows the blitz to deep into the pocket. Also the linebacker pushes Lane back into Worley enough to make him throw quicker than he needed to. If Lanes takes two steps up to meet the defender and takes a strong blocking stance, then Worley gets ample time to make the throw.
• 2nd Qtr, 6:46 on clock, 3rd and 20. Worley makes bad decision and throws into triple coverage for the interception. Another receiver ran a 20yd out to the sideline that was wide open. Same side of the field.
• 2nd Qtr, 00:34 on clock, 2nd and 5. Pass is complete to Pig Howard for 1st down. Problem is that Pig rounds off his route once again allowing the defender to close ground and make the stop. A simple quick inside head fake to the defender and a quick break to the left in his route would have created hesitation in the defender and enough separation for a catch and run in for the score.
• 2nd Qtr, 00:29 on clock, 1st and goal. Right Tackle gets whipped resulting in tackle for loss.
• 2nd Qtr, 00:20 on clock, 2nd and goal. Pig Howard rolls out of his break once again, but stops on his route. Worley throws to the spot where Pig would have been resulting in an interception.
• 3rd Qtr, 14:25 on clock, 1st and 10. Left Tackle releases block to quickly for screen play allowing defender to close on Worley before the RB gets head around to look for ball. Worley rushes throw. Throwing it high and too hard for the RB to catch.
• 3rd Qtr, 9:22 on clock, 1st and 10. Worley stares down the receiver as soon as ball is snapped. The end reads his eyes and jumps up tipping the ball. The backer in coverage also noticed Worley’s eyes which gave him the opportunity to break quicker in front of the tipped ball for the interception. I believe the backer would have at the least swatted the ball away from the receiver and possibly intercepted it anyway.
• 3rd Qtr, 7:31 on clock, 3rd and 7. Looks like a wrong route or terribly overthrown ball. Don’t know which.
• 3rd Qtr, 3:17 on clock, 2nd and 7. James Stone gets whipped by Nose Tackle resulting in tackle for loss. The Nose Tackle made plays all day.
• 3rd Qtr, 2:50 on clock, 2nd and 10. Another route error or bad throw. Don’t know which.
• 4th Qtr, 13:44 on clock, 1st and 10. Brendan Downs and the Left Tackle can’t seal the end on one defender resulting in Neal getting strung out to the sideline and not turning the corner.
• 4th Qtr, 13:24 on clock, 1st and 15. Worley overthrows Pig Howard. It looks like a bad overthrow of an open receiver, but I can’t tell if Pig’s route got knocked short and he wasn’t in the intended spot.
• 4th Qtr, 13:18 on clock, 2nd and 15. Worley has the screen play un-folding. The blitzing defender is coming very quickly. Neal lets him come un-touched. Worley rushes the throw before Neal gets out of his break to avoid the sack. It is my opinion that Neal in this situation has to stop the momentum of the blitzing defender before he can release into his route.
• 4th Qtr, 11:22 on clock, 3rd and 3. Worley throws perfect ball to Smith for the first down and Smith doesn’t hold on to the ball. Smith has done some good things, but he has had some easy drops.
• 4th Qtr, 8:10 on clock, 3rd and 6. Crossing Receivers run into each other and mess up the timing on the routes.

that the execution of our passing game is mostly terrible--that there are breakdowns on just about every pass play, whether a missed block or a bad route or a bad throw. You have to execute--and if you can't , you lose. Good point about backs blocking on blitzes--they've got to get up in the hole and hit the blitzer earlier, before he's bearing down on Worley.

.

I said earlier that I did not remember Worley throwing off his back foot in the game. I still do no remember many... but I am pretty sure this was. Was it a post route intended for North at around the 15?

We have a lot of young talent at WR. They are getting better each game. And it will come down to Worley giving them a chance to make some plays. UGA is a top 10 team, and many thing will have to go our way for us to be in the game. But if we can get to the fourth quarter within a passion then we have a chance.

Offensive play calling will be the key. If Ten stays with the run... short passes... screens. And getting the ball more to pig. TN makes a game of it.. playing like they did 2nd half sth Ala game .. it will be ugly.. we will see how TN coaching staff rises to this occasion.... my prediction GA 42. TN 24. TN keeps its close 1st half. GA pulls away 2nd half. I hope my vols don't get embarrassed like the Oregon game...

It also comes down to how far along they are with their install. They need to be able to counter an opponents adjustments.

And I will say again... UGA has a habit of choking vs UT. Richt seems to hate playing at Neyland. UGA came into Neyland in 2007 with everyone expecting them to win. UT spanked them behind Ainge. UGA's QB was Stafford who started as a rookie for Detroit... Ainge has a radio show.

Yes, it looks to be a post route.
