In his PC Pruitt insinuated that CB's weren't a need for this 2018 class

You forgot Abernathy. Have heard he could actually move to CB. I'm thinking he stays at S.

Gray is much more likely to play STAR in Pruitt's defense. Too slow for CB, probably too slow for S also.

If Gray is too slow for CB, Abernathy certainly is...

Gray played LB in High School and had been moved back and forth between OLB and S last year in practice. He ended at safety because of injuries to other Safeties.

Abernathy may be too slow for CB also, but he still could end up there if no one else steps up at CB.

I hate Abernathy at S. Maybe with better coaching but he takes horrible angles and doesn’t tackle well. Both important skills for a S. But like I’ve said about others, let’s see what he looks like with real coaching.

I’m confident Pruitt and staff will find his best position

Im thinking Byrd and Shamburgerler are our starters with Buchanan and Bailey as backups

I agree that Byrd & Shamburger are the favorites to start. We need at least 3 other serviceable CBs in case of injuries. It has been reported by VQ mods that Buchanan is currently battling Byrd for the spot opposite Shamburger.

Maybe Abernathy looked slow because he was out of position? I remember him staying right with Berry on every kick return when he was his lead blocker.

Somebody else said it but he took awful angles, slow flip in his hips... not good for a CB imo

Todd Kelly and he are the same player imo

Shamburger, buchannon, Byrd, osborne will all contribute i think. dont be shocked either to see a safety move over to corner with Abernathy TK and warrior holding that down

If you watched the Knoxville recruiting celebration video.. one of the defensive coaches talked about how one of the safeties would be getting everyone lined up correctly (the Jumper role) on Defense. This probably means Abernathy or TK Jr still end up starting at S opposite Warrior. Maybe Theo Jackson can learn the D enough to supplant both of them.

Thanks

Maybe this has been answered too but with those guys as blueshirts and not signing our 25 limit, what do we have as far as spots next year? Do we get to backcount, what is the advantage of blueshirting guys if not?

Assuming we sign no one additional...

22 spots - 20 signed = 2 spots that could be used for mid year enrollees. I think the concern with Davis is that he could be drafted in baseball. By blueshirting you don't commit the spot until you know for sure he'll be at UT. Not sure about Norwood.

I've never had to, so I'm ignorant on the procedure, but how do you contact Freak? TIA. I just want to know why mods are deleting my posts when they are not incriminating nor degrading to the point of putting someone down or hurting feelings!

I haven’t seen other than from VN posters, where Tenn coaches have definitely said Byrd was going to corner. I know he tweeted it but CPJ was standoffish in his answer to that ? Byrd’s body size and height aren’t what CPJ has used at CB in the past. He prefers 6”1 +

It was in VQ’s War Room. They could be wrong, but they’re generally super cautious before issuing anything.

Correct. VQ mods have said it's "official" Byrd to Corner. They wouldn't say that unless they were told by Pruitt's staff that was happening. Also interesting note from Friday's VQ podcast that Pruitt recruited Taylor to Bama as a CB and he might end up there at UT.

I have said this for several years now; these guys are not, for the most part, slow.. I don't think they understand quickly enough (poor or little coaching) where they need to be on most plays. Thereby they are always trailing the play. If you notice they never seem to be run away from after they recognize where they need to be. Just always trail the play until they start looking around to find someone to blame for the breakdown.

A momentary hesitation gets you burned and our DB’s were a case study in overthinking these past few seasons. Even before the last two stinkers.

I hope not.

I think Taylor is too dangerous of a slot.

3 Marquill Osborne DB 5-11 188
4 Maleik Gray DB 6-2 191
10 Tyler Byrd WR 6-0 195
15 Shawn Shamburger DB 6-0 191
18 Nigel Warrior DB 6-0 194
26 Theo Jackson DB 6-1 178
28 Baylen Buchanan DB 5-11 185
36 Terrell Bailey DB 5-11 178
42 Cheyenne Labruzza DB 6-0 188

I think we sit pretty well honestly with the guys we signed. I think guys like Jackson, Labruzza and Gray could play CB... all have speed and size to do it and move well.

Warrior isn’t moving, I don’t think. I don’t think he should, anyway.

Any ideas on who may start at CB next year, other than Tyler Byrd? Maybe he sees better options in the 2019 class? I believe we just missed on our targets and he didn't want to admit it.

We clearly needed CB or he wouldn’t have been all in on griffin and ITS in Cali. If CB wasn’t important than he wouldn’t have send his guys out West and wasted so much time.

If we really needed them he would’ve gone for lower hanging fruit.

Well, he just recruited Davis & Flowers, & I think both are 6-0.
