"In practice, we spend 70% on defense and 30% on offense

You really think she has a playbook. Have you been watching any of these games. When is the last time you said, wow that was really good!

I was very surprised to hear Holly say that the players decided to play zone defense in the second half after she called for man to man. (You can hear this in the post game presser. Start it at the 5 minute mark) It makes me wonder what other aspects of the game can be decided by the players rather than the coach.

Pat used to say something similar, that sometimes in a timeout huddle she would call for one defense and the players would want to play another. She said she believed players were more invested in a plan if it started from them, so she went with their decision.

I am sure if Holly had insisted on man-to-man, they would have played that way. They didn't finish the game in zone.

Totally agree with your "I'll take it"! Nice to see them get a tough road win.

Sounds like she's building a solid defensive team, a competitive team that was good defensive performance, help defense was good and we were contesting a lot shots.

I love this game, we looked like lady vols, defense and rebounding win championships.

Our guard play 1 and 2 is horrible, if we can get an aggressive one or two guard, we will be an elite team.

Holly, guard play, defense and rebounding win championship. Reynolds, Carter, Ariel and Middleton have to play better in order for us to win big games, but if we play with that defensive intensity and rebound the basketball, we should be in most games.

Jasmine Jones how about that always come ready to play in the big games minus the t.o, once she cleans that up, she'll be fine, still disappointed with Burdick getting 27 minute, to me she's an average player at best.

Nice win ladies, I'll take it, man that looked like lady vols reminded of the 2007 semi game versus UNC, or Lsu, gotta get stops.

I feel the same way. If this became the teams identity, I could live with it just fine. This is a hard way to play and it takes a lot of effort, game in and game to play in that style. But if this is not a one off effort, I am excited. For all the whining about the offense, there will be nights when Ariel, Jordan and others are hitting there shots and then games like these. But being able to grind it out defensively and win the boards (and be the team no on wants to play) that can be a night-in, night out formula

Does anybody REALLY think we can win anything with an offense as bad as ours is? This is not 1985 anymore. Yea, we played pretty good defense yesterday against a team that has been offensively for years--worse than us--but does anybody think we can beat Ct. shooting 20-30 percent? Please. The offensive play that Warlick explained for espn seems to be our chief offensive play--we use it a ton--but it seldom works. We don't have the players for it. We typically try to force the ball down low, and if that isn't open somebody goes 1v1--and usually misses. It is not team offensive basketball; it is not smart basketball. More generally, our guard play is not nearly good enough. Carter seems to have no confidence on offense; Massengale does not like playing defense and shows very little leadership ability; Reynolds is up and down. We have no leaders at guard, no players who really want to take charge of the team, and this is a problem.

I agree with you for the most part. But I actually thought Guard play defensively was "good", not great, but good.

Scaife, Tyler ppg 16.8 = had 22pts
Laney, Betnijah ppg 15.2 = had 4 pts
Copper, Kahleah ppg 14.3 = had 7 pts
In conclusion we held the 3 of them minus 13 points.

2 out of 3 isn't bad, not great, but not bad. It's a start (in a single foot step) in the right direction .... Will they continue will be the question that remains.

A good coach will use this win as logic. You play defense correctly, you do what you are supposed to do... this is your result.
GLV!

Can we let the players coach the remainder of the season?

To answer your question, no, not right now. But this game was a step in the right direction. Certainly better than the Texas and Chattanooga games. It was a start. I agree, the offense still needs a lot of work but we had to start somewhere and a win against a top 20 team on the road was a good place to start.

I was looking at stats and it said Jas had 6 TO's. I didn't know she had that many I only seen about two to's. She made up for them defensively and offensively.

True, I just would like our guards to keep the opposing teams or guards honest,so they cant help defending the post. Yes, our guards did play solid defense.

There was nothing new about this horrid offensive performance. UT has been playing this way offensively for 10 years. Every time we play a respectable opponent, you can expect terrible shooting, terrible passing, terrible decision-making with the ball. This is our MO. It was PS's MO. If Warlick really wants to improve the defense, she should kick Massengale in the backside and tell her to get lower and get serious about playing defense--she is lazy on D.

That style of play won us 8 nc's. we got a bunch of good looks last night, but once again the shots weren't falling. we have Izzy back and she is the cornerstone of what holly wants to do on offense. I think tucker could add an exciting element to the team, AND she can play defense. this team has a lot of upside and by the time the sec tourny rolls around, things should be clicking nicely for this team (I hope)

The door is wide open for Tucker, no one has claim the 2 spot, with Russell being out, I think we will see more of Burdick at the 4 and 5 spot.

Tucker will prolly back up at 3 spot too.
