Many fans mentioned that the staff needed to keep so & so, or should’ve overpaid for this guy or that guy to retain, I was very vocal about not doing so and thinking the staff was correct in their choices. Now that we’ve got some clarity let’s look at the incoming vs. outgoing, I don’t think there’s a single apples to apples from an investment standpoint that I don’t think we upgraded..

Juke Harris > JP Estrella
Terrence Hill Jr. > Amari Evans
Dai Dai Ames > Bishop Boswell
Jalen Haralson > Jaylen Carey
Tyler Lundblade > Cade Phillips
Miles Rubin > Ethan Burg
Braedan Lue > Clarence Massamba

Player | points per game

Juke Harris 21
Day Dai Ames 17
Jalen Haralson 16
Terrance Hill 15
Tyler Lundblade 15
Miles Rubin 11
Dewayne Brown 5

Our top 7 averaged 100 ppg combined last year. Only question is if Barnes can get them to work together and play defense? Recent history says yes.

Genuinely curious... What team of Pearl's looked this good on paper?
2007 team was top 10 preseason and just as solid on paper, imo. Lofton/Smith/Smith/Smith/Chism with Prince/Crews/Howell off the bench. Different team entirely than Barnes would build, but just as potent on paper for a Pearl's coaching style.

Not a bad pull, I think our 8th will be much better than Jordan Howell, and in retrospect obviously that team had a bunch of issues, but on paper preseason there was a lot of hype.

That 2007 team went 4-1 over that summer against some of Europe's best pro teams. There were several reasons for the hype. I do agree this team appears just a touch deeper on paper. 2007 team had some problems for sure and not just the team's leader battling cancer. Twas certainly a fun time to be a Vols bball fan when there hadn't been much fun to date.

I mean I do think you need to put Ament, Okpara, and Jakobi into the outgoing even if they aren't portal guys. I still think we are going to be stronger.

True and very relevant. That reality should temper our expectations somewhat. We lose a lot of experience and ability, and they take with them a lot of ass chewings to reach their level of significant contributions.

If you mean the 2007-2008 team that featured the #1 v #2 AP matchup at Memphis, which we won, then that’s a decent comp in some ways.

Ramar < hill (Ramar eventually benched due to being a head case, and couldn’t shoot)

Lofton >? Ames (no idea how Ames translates. This could go either way)

JaJuan << juke (this puts the 2026-27 team ahead imo)

Tyler = haralson (really similar styles and stats)

Chism > Rubin

—-

Howell < Lundblade (assuming Lundblade comes off the bench)

Looks as good on paper as I can recall since Pearl was coaching. Hopefully all the parts work as one!
Pearl never had a seasoned group like this. We had great players during the Pearl era. He recruited great talent, no doubt. His best team at the end of the season came up big in the S16 and made it to the EE. 2/3 of our big three were transfers from Oklahoma and Arizona. Bobby Maze and J.P. Prince

What the people suggesting that we downgraded or that we should have kept this one or that one conveniently forget to mention is that group overachieved to get to an E8 and were badly exposed at that point for being what they were - a scrappy but very flawed unit. This is a resounding across the board upgrade, especially after we land another big.

The only player on that list I would have liked to keep is Evans, because you need guys to do the little things and the dirty work, and he's that guy. But he clearly is looking for a bigger role, and we'll see if he gets it at Texas.
