Who remembers the “Last Tackle” drill all the Senior players would do in the last practice before the final regular season game, typically Vandy?
The staff would put a Vandy jersey and I think a helmet on a tackling dummy, and the Seniors would get introduced one at a time, and do a short sprint and smash the dummy.
Some Seniors stopped form tackling, and started abusing the dummy in various ways, like martial arts kicks. Whatever would get a laugh.
But, for Bill Duff’s “last tackle” before the 1997 Vandy game, he supposedly pulled out a switch blade, and sliced the dummy up! Believe that legend is true.
