Just found this post, and not sure what to think about coach Z, he was known for only wanting blockin( WR's when he was at Florida also...I don't just want our WR's to be blocking dummies...

I got a buddy who is a recruiting intern and he is assigned to work with coach azzani. his job is to review recruits game film and find guys who he thinks are the best prospects and then he will send their film up to coach z. he was looking at the film of travis rudolph earlier in the year and he really liked him because of his play making ability and his speed and body build. so my friend sends his film to coach z. he and coach sat down and talked about rudolph and my friend was telling him everything he liked about it and coach z said i i see what you are saying but can he block? my friend was caught off guard because film doesnt always show that part of the game, so he said im not sure but its undeniable that this kid can do some pretty special things and coach just said i do not care if he can run a 4.3 or has a 45 in veritcal i want guys who can block and help marlin get a couple thousand yards this year. my buddy just couldnt believe he would pass on rudolph because he didnt know for sure he could block. i told him get used to it lol. just thought id share this with you guys. caoch azzani eventually offered him btw

Sounds logical to me - like he wants the total package, no?

he wants a fat and physical wide receiver - I really think Jason Croom fits his style very well and as he matures in the position we will see good things from that group.

Guess he could block then...

This staff seems to like 2 types of receivers for this system: big and tall outside WRs who can block and catch a jump ball and short quick guys for the slot. Sounds like this guy was an outside guy that would have to be able to block.

I don't think that's necessarily Coach Z's mantra as it is Butch's...Azzani as the recruiting coordinator is in charge of getting the players with both the skills and mindset to make Butch's system flourish...though confusing at first, the Powell and Johnson commitments seem to fit that criteria...I don't know if it will succeed but that's irrelevant...BUTCH knows...and he gets it

If a WR can not block, he should not have a position on the team no more than a WR who can block but not catch the ball. It takes both to play the position for a team who wants to win Championships.

Apparently we have a short memory of when our receivers were a lot of the reason we couldn't run off tackle. Coach Z isn't being difficult he just wants the whole package. Receivers have to do a lot of other things than just catch and run routes.

Head Coaches typically have a particular philosophy such as 60% run and 40% pass. If what I hear about Butch his may even be closer to 65-70% run and 30-35% pass. And on most of those run plays there are receivers blocking. So if we assume that they are either blocking or running interference on 60-70% of the plays from scrimmage, blocking and physicality is probably one of the more important attributes...JMO

WRs who can block well are an underrated commodity imo.

Hines Ward may make the HOF because he was gifted enough at blocking to keep him with the Steelers long enough for some Super Bowl victories to pad his resume

Hines Ward did okay with the title of a "blocking" WR

And they don't have to be huge to block D.Moore and G.Jones were pretty good blockers

Sounds like even I could be an intern? Of course they have to block! I am hoping this isn't serious.

I agree, the total package is what we want. But Florida seems to place a ton of blame on coach Z as to why their receivers suck. Because he focused on their blocking ability more than their skill set.

I don't want our WR's to look like that pile of dog crap Florida calls WR's

I would think that "Can they block" is code for "Will they do the little things right". I think anyone playing football for a quality HS program can catch and run. There is no shortage of prima donnas that are 4.4 and can catch a football. There is a shortage of guys who will do things right on every play whether their number is called or not.

Might have something to do with Urban Meyer..quick...name a top flight WR produced under him...at Bowling Green, Utah or Florida...and can't use Harvin...he's just a freak athlete

As a former offensive lineman in high school I resent that remark :hmm:

Good point. There also is no shortage of wide receivers who leave the college ranks and still need remedial training in proper route running, which is preposterous, given the fact that route running is a fundamental skill for that position. I am inclined to think that "Can he block?" is also code for "does he possess the physicality to beat close press coverage, such as we will face from Florida and Alabama cornerbacks?"
