Dude you’re negative 90% of the time. As a fanbase we’re just barely removed from well over a decade of abject misery. Just let people be happy, for Pete’s sake. If you can’t, don’t be surprised when you get some pushback.
There is literally nothing negative about any of my posts in this thread and they should have no bearing on another persons happiness. Nico has played 6 quarters of “no stress” football. That’s the only point I was trying to make.

You seem to be easily triggered. A fan forum is for all viewpoints right? My original take was not negative at all nor meant to be a splash of cold water. It was a true statement that means things won’t always be easy and we will see Nico struggle at some point. I hope you won’t be one of the loudest critics of #8 when he fails to live up to your expectations.

Thanks, but I don't get 'triggered' talking about what is essentially entertainment.

Forums like this are absolutely for all viewpoints, and the more healthy debate the better. But do you honestly believe that anyone who has watched more than a few games doesn't understand that Nico won't be outscoring teams 20-0 in every quarter ad infinitum? We clearly know that the big tests are coming and only an idiot believes he will roll flawlessly through the season..

And you can look at my posts and see that I'm pretty realistic and not one to engage in peaks and valleys. I actually used the wrong word with 'expectations' - it should have been 'hopes'. The only thing I "expect" out of Nico or anyone on UT is max effort and working hard every week, and fortunately we have a staff and a bunch of guys who get it, so that won't be an issue.

And no, when (and it will happen) Nico has a bad game, you will not see me jumping off the bandwagon and hammering away. These are still kids, and having ridiculous 'expectations' is a certain recipe for disappointment.

Which also means, we have no idea what Nico will play like in the face of adversity. He’s special but still very inexperienced.
Ehh I would say we have some idea. Bowl game he played vs Iowa Defense which was legit one of the best in the nation. I think the fact their offense was basically nonexistent made it weird. I think NC State will be a good test of that, how does he react when the other team has points on the board?

Exactly! I think he’s a cool cat and the team will feed off his confidence. But until we’ve seen it, the question remains.

I think that point is wrong, CBO.

Wasn't Nico sacked seven times in the bowl game? We might have won that game handily, and it never have been in question, but from HIS perspective, that's not stress-free. The fact that he remained so cool and collected through the entire game in spite of getting knocked around, that's a testament to his ability to thrive when things are going tough.

Now, being behind in score and having to play catch-up is a whole nother kind of stress, one he hasn't faced yet in college. But I imagine he did at least once in a while in high school. So I think he has a handle on that, too.

Nico is not the "zomg freshman babe in the woods" that you and some others on the board want to believe. And I don't know why you even want to believe that. Are you trying to buffer yourself from potential disappointment?

Don't sweat that. It's not coming. Nico is just as good as we all anticipated him being. He's not a freshman, not in his brain or his heart. He's smart enough to learn vicariously, and he has an entire season of that from 2023. He's savvy, he's talented, he's experienced enough (yes, he'll get more), and he's gonna continue to do great.

So just enjoy it. I think that's what everyone in this thread is trying to tell you.

Go Vols!

Oh, post some comic from the 40s and tell us again how Gaston Moore will be the starter, Woodsman.
Still mocking one of our players, I see. And lying to boot. I didn't say Moore would be a flat out starter, read the post again and try telling the truth, assuming you can. Oh, my comic book era was from the 60s - 90s, though I did know about earlier editions, I didn't read them. But your post tells me among many other things, beyond mocking our players, and lying, you're assumptive. But that's OK, periodically I am as well. The difference? I can admit to being so, I doubt you HONESTLY can.

I struggle with the same thing. I don’t trust optimism so I douse things that are far from certain.

I try to refrain from checking statements like “Nico is doing great!” While unable to resist tempering expectations when people make predictions like “Nico is going to lead us to the National Championship this year!”

I’m enjoying it as much as anyone. But it’s foolish to think we’ve seen Nico in anything close to what he’s going to see as the season continues. I don’t think he’s your average redshirt freshman and I don’t expect he will fold under pressure of tight ballgames. He’s legit! Some folks are acting like I insulted their mama. Probably just the “ESPN hates us” folks that can’t handle anything other than glowing affirmations.

I think there are only three games that have the ability to make Nico look like a freshman QB. And probably only one or two of them might. Depends a lot on our OL.

Outside of those three games, this isn't a conversation we need to have. He's going to be poised and show off all that talent in the rest.

Go Vols!

I love threads like this. Starts out happy and quickly deteriorates beyond recognition. 🦧

Nico is special. He won’t pay attention to the scoreboard. He’ll execute the plan one play at a time and make adjustments as the coaching staff determines… one play at a time. He’s not going to let crowd or scoreboard dictate his execution.

Will he have bad plays? Games? Perhaps, but those will not deter him.

How do I know these things? Just ask Carnac the Magnificent.
Showing your age! 😀
