Interesting article about Oregon's high-tempo mentality

And regarding the original topic... The more I think about the Ducks this year and after seeing them in person last night, the more I get reminded of the '08 Sooners. Tons of points, dubbed juggernaut offense, very fast tempo, rolling over everybody (Texas had to put up 45 to win) then got shut down by Florida.

I could see Oregon rolling through the Pac-10 without a loss then getting smacked in the title game... Fortunately for them, the teams left with a real shot except Alabama seem to have somewhat pedestrian defenses.

I still get this sneaking suspicion Alabama will win out, beat USCjr in the SECCG and play for another national title.

I'd agree with that 100%. The Beavs gave us an incredible ball game. But I see what Milo's saying... Arizona with a healthy Foles COULD be a very intriguing showdown.

Last year, they had Canfield, Quizz, and James-all healthy.

This year, Katz and Quizz.

This year's game against them scares me a lot less.

Oregon will roll Arizona. The wildcats aren't as good as their record reflects. The Ducks will win by at least two TD's. The Ducks toughest matchup will be against SC.

And Oregon really is a less talented version of the 08 Sooners, and they will lose in the title game if they're matched up agaisnt Alabama.

Oregon 2010 through 7 games: 386 points / 55 points per game
Oklahoma 2008 through 7 games: 328 points / 47 points per game
Florida 2008 through 7 games: 294 points / 42 points per game (won NC)
Miami 2001 through 7 games: 307 points / 44 points per game (won NC)

It's similar in that we've all heard this "juggernaut offense, who's gonna stop them?" song and dance before.

People are touting the offense here; that Sooners team was dubbed the greatest offense of all time before getting shut down by the nation's premier defense in Florida.

Luckily for the Ducks, the nation's premier defense lost a game and has to have some breaks come their way to make it to Glendale.

I asked a number of Duck fans while tailgating yesterday if they thought they could beat Alabama in the national championship game. All but one of them said no.

What else would you expect? Our fanbase is new to this. We're flying high. We seem unstoppable. Optimism is going to be abundant. Who's to say if we would beat Alabama? We wouldn't know unless we played.

The Ducks fanbase is absolutely prone to overreaction in times of success, and most I've talked to around P-town would have you believed they are an elite program over the last decade.

If they win out, unless they get lucky and draw somebody like Auburn, Duck fans world is going to come crashing down.

What team is going to stop them? There is not one decent defense in their way. Bamas got to far to climb now. AU plays def like a western team. Namely like CRAP.

Alabama is still very much in the national title picture.

Arizona and Cal could both have some success against the Ducks, it remains to be seen.

Re: Auburn, say what you will about their style, they're about to be the SEC's sole undefeated team after tomorrow.

Bamas gotta play LSU and AU. I think LSU has as good a chance of beating Bama as AU. LSU can stop anybody. But their off sucks so they will lose to somebody. Bama is probably the SECs best overall team, but McElroy sucks so bad he drags the whole team down. The only reason Bama lost to SC was Garcia played over his grade. I think that AU will win the SEC though. Cam is doing a great Vince Young impersonation. If their D can tighten up they could win it all.

... So you're predicting that Auburn, with their spread/read/option offense and no defense, west coast overall style of ball is going to win the SEC?

Strong stuff.

I'm sleepy, so it is weak. I just think McElroy sucks so bad he drags Bama down. IF.. AU can get a couple of TDs early I think they win against Bama. If Bama has to depend on Mac I think they lose. You are probably right though Bama should win. LSU is chaos theory brought to life. Who in the he!! knows what they are going to do? P.S. I did say IF they can tighten up their defense.

Scoring defense rankings...

New Mexico - 120th
Tennessee - 74th
Portland State - FCS
Arizona State - 51st
Stanford - 58th
Washington State - 118th
UCLA - 91st

So, teams that gave up a ton of points to Oregon now have low scoring defense rankings? Isn't that what is expected to happen?

Also, this "only played one over .500 team" argument. Wouldn't those teams win percentage be a little higher had the Ducks not beat them?

When am I going to see this argument:

"Yeah. But, the Ducks have yet to beat a 1.000 team."

If they win out, unless they get lucky and draw somebody like Auburn, Duck fans world is going to come crashing down.

I don't think many would see losing only in the title game as a "crashing down."

I can think of some other programs fitting the "crashing down" description though.

Yeah. Ok.

Whoa.... so you're asserting that Oregon's offense is more talented than Oklahoma's 08 offense.(think about how many players were drafted from that offense. Start with Sam Bradford, Heisman winner and #1 overall pick in lasy years draft)

Strong stuff, W4P.

Oregons schedule outside of Stanford has been pretty poor. It will get better, but it's just the way it is right now.

You'd have a point there if Oregon were the only team the program in question had played. After 7 games, that argument goes out the window.
