fwiw, I think I shall stop commenting on the good or bad things that happen during lady vol games until I watch the replay of the games and have calmed down. less mistakes and hysterics that way.

with that said, those fugging refs should be tarred & feathered for letting last nights game become a demolition derby.

Wow, gule! In that case what punishment would you pick for the ones that reffed :yuck: the Misery game?

I visit from time to time and occasionally post.
I agree that TN is struggling on offense and am not sure how capable Holly is of making them better as a team. But ...
You are winning the games you should be winning and that is not a bad thing and hasn't always been true. I thought you might struggle against Rutgers, Stanford, and Oregon State - it wasn't necessarily pretty but you took care of business and that is a definite positive.

How can anyone honestly say that this team doesn't look better than the team that loss to UT-Chatt and Texas? My goodness, I get the feeling that some of you hate Holly and is hoping she fail. Even UConn struggled against St. John, who is unranked, Sunday. I must admit I was tough on Holly the beginning of the season, but I do see some improvement from the team and coaching staff. Have anyone heard of coach's talk? Anyone with eyes can see that this team has been practicing offense. They no longer look completely loss, solid ball movement, players are not just standing around, they are cutting to the basket and screening to get open. I saw 1-4 low sets, 5 out motion sets, 4 out 1 in motion sets and 3 out 2 in motion sets. That comes from practicing offense. Holly want opponets to think they don't so opponets will not really gameplan for it. Yes, this team can continually improve, but their defense and intensity is at another level compared to earlier in the season. I guess Duke and South Carolina don't practice offense because that 51-50 victory of SC was a defensive battle and poor shooting by both teams. What about Stanford, which is known for their offense, but has been struggling all year. What about Texas, who is one of the top scoring teams in the country, but struggled badly against Texas A&M. What about Louisville, who was beating UK by double digits and struggled badly when Kentucky turned up the pressue. None of these coaches are criticize and murdered with words the way Holly is. Everyone knows Kentucky basically plays streetball, hardly runs any offenive sets and Matthew Mitchell haven't won anything, but some of you wanted him as a coach. This team is improving and Holly is also, but in some fans eyes she will NEVER be good enough. Holly Warlick is not Geno. Geno was not the Geno he is today when he first start coaching. Can we at least give her time to continue to improve her craft?

Good post. Posters like armchair and darth are, in their own minds, so much better coaches than Holly and the rest of the staff that they cannot keep from criticizing her. In reality they don't notice these adjustments at all.

I agree that our offense is improved. We had a lot of cupcakes on the OOC, which was a good time to get our defense in order, since our team by virtue of size and athleticism could easily outscore them by 50 points. In the past several weeks, obviously more time and work has been put into the offense, and it's starting to pay off. Our ball movement and offense sets are much better. I also see Reynolds becoming more aggressive as a playmaker, and if Carter and Massengale keep up the point production, our guards are in good shape.

If Tennessee has a few more games where Carter/Massengale carry the load offensively, I think that will open up the inside for Graves and Harrison to operate in the paint.

Last year, Simmons was the guard threat that prevented teams from clogging the paint on defense. If those two players can continue to produce, then opposing defenses will have no choice but to guard them more closely and free up the posts.

I'm so frustrated with the officiating! The undercutting by Vandy was just plain dangerous and it was driving me out of my mind that the refs let it go on and on. I guess that was a conscious choice pre-game by the refs, that they would allow it. But there were so many weird things allowed, I was wondering why the refs were even there. Walks, a double dribble, a 10-sec violation - not ticky-tacky stuff, but very obvious - ignored! There was a shot attempt by a Vandy player that missed everything, but was rebounded by the same player - illegal, isn't it? The "charge" on a break-away where the trailing player somehow was set in defensive position in the ref's eyes, wth? Cierra at the line only once though game stopped 3 times for her due to pummelings. Were the refs not being paid or what was going on? "Jump ball" - seemed that was the only call they "knew".

I know there's no answer - we'll keep getting the same mess game after game. I know that. I'm just blowing off steam, and that's what these boards are for. >:| I was so happy that Vandy was allowing UT fans back in seats lower than the 3rd level that I really looked forward to this game. Wasn't expecting such a horror show.

Thanks for the post, UCM. It is good to hear from an "outsider". We VN people can get a little involved in our Ladys:clapping:and maybe:blush:lose a little perspective.

Volly, the 'time out' the refs gave to Vandy was a jump ball. Played it back several times, and Jordan's hand was on the ball before the girl signaled TO. The woman ref (not Dee) actually got it right and the man overturned her. Just saying. I'm not in the mood to give the refs anything after the Misery and Vandy games.

Good post,VP,and the undercutting happened so much that the players are obviously coached to do that. The game officials set out to teach Izzy a lesson, and they let other things completely go. I fully expected a serious injury to one of our Lady Vols. So glad they made it through without a season ending injury, but the bruising and soreness might affect our players against A&M. I could not believe that Holly saw all this without making it an issue with the refs.

The TV announcers said that Melanie was the one who called time out.

Hey Volly,

The reffing in the SEC always leaves a lot to be desired but this game was exceptionally bad. Along with the examples you gave, there was no consistency in how they treated the LVs and Vandy. Izzy picked up touch fouls for bumps in the post whereas Vandy players were literally putting our arm braces (arm bent at elbow) and shoving LVs in the back. It was crazy. It seems like the refs get intimidated by the Vandy crowd or something. But the LVs persevered on to Texas A&M..

Once they get used to playing that hard on defense and hitting the boards, they're shots will start to fall, you spend/exert a lot on energy on defense, and it takes players a while to adjust. We will (players) keep getting better, it looks like Carter has turned the corner, Reynolds is getting close.

Defense, rebounds and good guard play win championships.

How can anyone honestly say that this team doesn't look better than the team that loss to UT-Chatt and Texas?

Because it doesn't. 36% in this game? 31% in the last game? I'm glad you see all this great passing and ball movement, but the offense is still reaching historically bad levels.

Can we at least give her time to continue to improve her craft?

After 30-whatever years assistant coach, a transition year with Pat, and two and a half as head coach? How much time do you think she needs?

Since Volly mentioned the undercutting, I'll say that probably gets to me more than anything. But, we face three more teams that along with their constant slapping, clawing, scratching and general body beating use undercutting as part of their game plan. Georgia, Florida and Kentucky.

Are you a coach? What suggestions do you have? What else is the coach suppose to do when players are missing wide open shots? Tennessee is running offensive sets and moving with a purpose which is way better than earlier in the season. The coach can't help shots are not falling. All she can do is encourage the players to get reps to gain confidence. I must say the guard play is improving each game. Being an assistant for 30 years does not compare to being a head coach when you call the shots, make the big decisions, the pressure is on. There is a total difference. I think Holly is improving as a head coach. She has this team playing with confidence, toughness and high intensity. Like I said, Geno was not the Geno he is now when he first start coaching.

No matter how much we blame Holly, or don't blame Holly, no one is going to fire her. She is going to get her chance no matter if we like it or not. I still think that sometimes it is best to bring in a non homer who has a different perspective. Before Pat little shooting guards ruled the game so Pat bought in the big athletic girls who could shoot inside and from the top of the key. At that time I would say the Lady Vols had by far the best inside game in women's basketball. In many ways Pat took a page out of the men's playbook. She had some very good guard play as well. This changed the game where now bigs like Stowie and Wilson can shot inside and outside. In many ways Genno is using Pat's game plan with a few more outside shooters. Every team is going to have its ups and downs, no matter if it is UCONN or Tennessee, however, they have to find a way to address their weak areas. I think we have the outside shooters it is just not clicking. I would like to see Middleton play a little more. I think she has the ability to become a very good outside shooter. I love Massengale as a shooter but she makes far too many unforced errors.

This teams have come a long way offensively compared to earlier in the season. The ball movement is better, they are moving with a purpose and the guards are improving. Its not the coach's fault when a player is wide open and miss. That's on the player. Get in the gym like Carter and gain confidence with repetition. The team doesn't look confuse like earlier in the season. The sloppy passess and unforced turnovers are on the players. I can finally see that they really practice offense and Holly saying that she really don't care is coach's talk. I can see a difference. We need to just consistently knock down shots.

I'll lend you my glasses because the offense was bad.
