Was listening to some of the player interviews from today and I was intrigued by this comment towards the end of Cam's media session:

#VolReport: Cameron Sutton Media Session (9/17/14) - YouTube

For those who can't view it, he says that last year's team would only feel bad for a few minutes after losses and then be joking around like it didn't bother them.

But after the OU loss, they really felt it.

I know Butch brought it up after the game as well. That's really important for the team moving forward. You can't win tough games if you don't absolutely hate losing. And it definitely sounds like a lot of players on team 117 didn't care if they lost games.

'Cause they didn't go there just to play and lose.

And they played good enough to (maybe) have an opportunity to win...'cept for 3-4 BIG plays. Believe me...the OU fans I was with and sitting around felt it, too.

There's absolutely no need to be down on Team 117. They came in here and were committed to Tennessee through thick and thin. They were dealt an unbelievably difficult hand and it is regrettable that anyone would project onto them the vitriol due primarily to Derek the dumbazz Dooley.

I enjoyed listening to Cam. I have noticed this on the Butch Jones show interviews and various spots like Cam here, these young men seem to have good heads on their shoulders. I am not saying they are all perfect angels, they are college students, but they act like intelligent young men. Nothing like that dumbazz Jamies Winston at F$U. What an idiot always doing stupid things, stealing crab legs, his latest "proclamation" in the student union building and whatever is to come next. I am very please with the quality of football player and quality of young men that CBJ seems to be bringing to the Hill. Let's go beat the thugs down at Athens and RISE TO THE TOP.

It has less to do with coaching than just the reality of the situation. Those that win a lot expect to win. Those that lose a lot get use to losing.

This team has a lot of fresh blood. It can be aggravating with respect to growing pains but refreshing in terms of energy and a new (winning) mentality.

That's the part of rebuilding that the "win now because we're Tennessee!!" crowd never takes into consideration.

Most of the recruits from last year's class came from winning programs. They played for state titles. They will hate to lose!!

I am certainly hopeful that UT will lose the "here we go again" this year against UF. I have thought for years that UT vs. UF was a bit like UT vs. Vandy (years ago), when everything that could go wrong did when UT played UF. Likewise when Vandy when played UT, Vandy just seemed to help their own defeat.

Losing becomes a state of mind and self-fulfilling prophecies (i.e. "...don't fumble, don't fumble...") become reality.

Exactly. You should never coach a player not to fumble. You should coach them to successfully possess and secure the ball.

I can understand Team 118 being down after the OU loss, but they definitely need to hold their heads up, because they played their hearts out for a full 60 minutes against a highly talented OU team. Learn from it, move on. Snap and clear.

Think about the implications of Dooley's advice to Palardy: "Don't f*** it up."

Now imagine the forms of "encouragement" he offered over the years.

I wouldn't be surprised if he talked down to the team after losses to Bama, Florida, UGA, etc., and just flat out told them they weren't good enough to compete yet....considering he did that EVERY WEEK in his pre and post-game interviews.

man I'm proud of these boys! We're gonna get somebody and everybody knows it! Fla, GA, SC, etc and we are on the way back! The Vols can't get back to the top without our support, so let's get behind our boys

Because they appear to be playing for each other and when letting your brother down bothers you, you are becoming a team.

They seem to do a lot of pairing the Seniors up with the new guys. The Holly Anderson article mentioned they'd like to match Seniors with freshmen on the road, but they don't have enough to do that.

I'm guessing the seniors that are left have done a good job impressing upon new guys how much they want, or even need, to win. 3 or 4 years of absolute sh*t, and they finally like something positive.

With as much effort as this staff puts into learning about their players, I'd say they've made some incredibly strong mentoring relationships.

Given the work ethic of guys like AJ, Worley, Maggitt, etc...I'd hate to be the young guy that feels like he let them down. Hopefully it pays off as the season goes along.

That still gets under my skin when I think about it.
