I wonder what the results would say if we ran this poll tomorrow. I voted he needs a final four then he will be. Obviously didn’t get it, so he still does, or several more second weekend runs or SEC championships

It’s mind boggling people think he’s better than Pearl. If we would have just held onto him like all the fans wanted to then we may have a NC by now who knows. This current athletic department would have kept him. Hamilton and his goons that followed after held us back for so many years

The answer is Ray Mears

And Pearl dug his own grave. It’s embarrassing enough when a grown man can’t accept his own fault in things, worse when other grown men do it for them

I hadn't looked at this thread since last week but my lord. Did someone really say Pearl inherited a program on the way up?? (They did) and someone else insulted Ray Mears, who would have went to 14 consecutive NCAAs here, always was near the top in the SEC standings and the NCAA bid was awarded in case of ties (to Kentucky every year).

NCAA tournament success wasn't possible then for most programs because of the extremely limited slots and not getting to have 3/14 matches to pad your wins if you did get there. Pearl and Barnes both benefit greatly from their era in that regard.

There are a lot of coaches that have done far worse than what Pearl did without any penalty. Because of our ignorance, we let him go to Auburn where he has turned around one of the worst programs in the SEC and led them to the final 4 when their best player was hurt. If not for that they likely would have won it all.

If not for the New Mexico State player missing those free throws at the end of the game, they’re out in the first round. Pearl didn’t have to be a liar or encourage others to be. He chose to, so he chose to forfeit his position as the coach at Tennessee.

And yet, somehow, Pearl still doesn't have a title.... what the hell is wrong with you people?

I’d gladly take those little lies if it meant keeping him as our coach. I live in the real world

Says the one pining for Bruce Pearl to be Tennessee’s basketball coach and thinks we’d have a natty by now if he were
No, there’s no chance he’d return. I said we should have never gotten rid of him. And he made a few tournament runs that were more exciting than anything Barnes has done here. We were one shot away from making a final 4

Really break it down, its Barnes > Pearl comparing both of their times at Tennessee.
  • Barnes 4 plus 25 win seasons, Pearl had 2
  • Barnes has been to 3 sec title games, and won 1. Pearl only went to one and lost it.
  • Barnes inherited a destroyed program, Pearl did not.
  • Barnes has put more in the NBA than Pearl.
  • Barnes had us number 1 for 8 games, Pearl 2.
  • Barnes has had us ranked in the top 5 for 3 different seasons, Pearl only 1
  • Only Pearl has is the one Elite 8, and that is really that.
Overall, Barnes has created more overall success at Tennessee, than Pearl did.

Or that E8 run may have been his best run. I dont' know why people jump to he would have won an NC considering he actually usually underachieved in the postseaon here, and he's had 1 FF at Auburn and his 4 other NCAAT appearances have been R32 exits. Both his E8 run here and his FF run at Auburn were unexpected. So let's not act like Pearl has proven to be that great of a postseason coach himself.

Really, other the E8 one, which ones? The second round loss to Witchita St. as a 2 seed his first year? The huge blown lead to OSU in the Sweet 16? Maybe the best team in the history of UT basketball getting b-slapped by Louisville in the Sweet 16? The first round exit to Oklahoma St.? The first round ass kicking to Michigan?

Please elighten us, which of those 5 other ones was better than "anything Barnes has done here"?

Didn't Pearl's team get ousted in the first weekend?

Dude lied to the NCAA, turning a secondary violation into a major violation. He put our entire program at risk of sanctions. Yet people on this board still want to hang on his nuts. Sad.
