Is Brad Stevens making a mistake

Sorry but after 2 nc games in a row he is not a fraud. How will he just start losing games? Wake up one morning and not remember how to coach? Early onset dementia? If he stays at Butler he will win that league for many more years to come and will get a automatic NCAA bids.

He did not win the the Horizon Conference during the regular season; he tied for second.

If he continues to drop five games/year in that conference and does not win the tournament, he will not get NCAA bids.

To do what he has done at Butler he is better than just a good coach. Maybe he wasn't overly excited about any of the job openings this spring. According to what he says publicly I also think he is enjoying his time at Butler and feels loyal to the program as well. That being said if a top program opens up in the midwest especially Indiana and crazy money is thrown at him I think he will leave within 1 to 2 years.

He'll have his crack at the Marquee jobs when they open, be it Indiana, Syracuse, or Connecticut, or somewhere along that line.

IndianaVol summed it up for me.

His wasn't a very good argument...

He has now set his bar at Butler pretty damn high...Even if he doesn't return to the Final Four with Butler it will not make him a fraud...It's scary to think what he could do at a big-time program with the athletes he would be able to recruit if he can guide Butler to consecutive title game appearances...

Butler has won 20+ games a year for nearly 20 years.. He might as well hangout in the horizon and collect his cash.

I'm not sold on him as a coach. I'm really just not. if he has a few more mediocre seasons like he had this year and finishes them with a loss in the first round of the tournament each time, his stock will drop.

Glad you're here to give us the lowdown on how his career turns out.

Did Butler have a mediocre season (Their record was beetter than most)?...Yes, by standrad of the last couple of seasons at Butler.

Did / has Brad Stevens made a mistake by staying at a place he TRULY loves?...NO...I work at a job making about 3 to 5 bucks an hour less than what I could elsewhere because I love what I do.

I wish UT could get to the place where they make the championship game and it be considered "mediocre."

My point exactly..by people saying Stevens is making a mistake...I would take his "mistake" every year!!!

Lets not forget Butler has been a winning program for many years before Stevens took over. They hadn't been Final 4 or NC game good but they have been a program that contantly won 20 games and made the NCAA. Stevens is not interested in the IU job or the possiable IU job down the road. To say he is a fraud would just be talking out of your a$$. Most thought this team had no shot at making the NCAA after losing Hayword to the NBA then he gets them right back to the NC game. The guy can flat out coach and there is a TON of talent in Indiana to recruit from even with Purdue,IU and Ohio State heavily recruiting the state.

You'd think a fan of a school that has never made the final four would be impressed by a coach taking BUTLER to consecutive championship games with no nba talent on the roster.

Here's another way of thinking about it. How many future nba guys has coach cal had at kentucky the last two seasons. Cal has an elite 8 and a final four.

Butler went to 2 straight title games. They lost one by 2 points and the other game they were competitive despite shooting 18 percent from the field.

I'm not sure about his coaching abilities yet

Correct Butler did not win their conf. tourney this year. So how did they get a bid when you just said they couldn't if they didn't win their tourney and had 5 or more losses? His SOS & quality wins will get him in the majority of the time without having to win his league. He has won the Horizon tourney 2 of 4 and been reg. season champs 3 of 4. What a fraud!

TBH, i feel like their run (at least this year) was based more on dumb luck and other teams being stupid than their own actual skills or his coaching ability. The Pitt game was a joke. Florida gave them the game by jacking up stupid 3's. VCU is probably the easiest final four draw out there. I just don't think his coaching ability got them through this tournament as much as it was just really good luck and other teams making stupid mistakes. (And yes, i realize that people will say "well his team didn't make those mistakes because they are well coached!")

Incorrect. Butler did win their conference tournament; they did not win the Regular Season Conference Championship (a much greater indication of their place in the conference).

I stand corrected you're right he won his tourney but not the reg. season. None of this changes the fact he is still a great coach who is not a fraud.

Since we're splitting frog hairs he did not tie for second. The standings show Butler was 2nd. Top 3 teams were 13-5. If you're going to say he tied for second let's just say the top 3 tied for 1st. I still say if he stays at Butler he will make the NCAA at least at a 75% rate.

I don't think any of the Final Four teams won their reg. season conference. Are all those teams just lucky? Did all the really well coached skilled teams get beat? What does that say about UConn? Granted a stronger conference but they finished 9th in reg. season Big East.

Its funny it says he didn't take it more seriously because of the ncaa deal and the tourney run. Well heck without the ncaa issues we wouldn't have even been looking for a coach. I bet he ends up at a big program. I am not exactly sure you can consider the UT job a big time job. I mean yeah Bruce did make basketball relevent at here. I wouldnt really consider UT as a big time basketball program.

Yes I think he is making a mistake. In today's world you need to take the money and run whenever you can. He was 1 injury this year from not making the field, next year and the year after he might not be so lucky. (Face it Butler had almost no depth) Miss the tourney 2 or 3 times and recruiting gets tougher then he is labled a flash in the pan.

Great coach but he is taking a million $$ risk.

To me, his decision to stay at Butler is parallel to an underclassman's decision to stay in school when he is projected as the number one overall pick.

Steven's stock is not going to get better. It can get worse though...a lot worse.
