Is CBD oil all that?

My 17 year old son is suffering from sciatica due to an injury last summer. He is getting chiropractic treatment which provides temporary relief. I'm considering CBD gummies, but, these things are expensive and there are a ton of products available. I can't afford to experiment too much to find a good product. I am turning to my Volnation comrades to provide advice about your experience with these products. I don't trust the reviews I read anywhere, but it would be different on Volnation. Go Vols!
Placebo effect IMO

Well, you made an impact today, my friend. We are trying to find a place to get an MRI (prices vary wildly and I have to pay out of pocket). And then get an orthopedic opinion from there. We'll keep going with the CBD in the meantime. Thanks.

A lower back MRI without insurance can run from $800 to $1200.

That's about what I found for MRI with contrast when I looked at estimates on BCBSNC's website. Without contrast is around 685 at the office I found on their list. I pay the whole thing out of pocket due to deductible. I'll ask if it's cheaper paying it without insurance.

If th was directed at me, the OP, I've an inversion table for 25 years. I drug it out for my son and he used it. It gives him temporary relief.

Yeah, I should have replied to your original post.

I have a compressed disk at L4. When i aggravate it inversion lets me stretch it and remove pressure.

Is the relief long lasting? Have you had steroid shots for your pain? If so, do they last? We're taking our son to a back surgeon week after next. He's lost 50 pounds and is down to 275 (6'3) . That has helped some. But, there is still something going on with his spin. We shall see.

No, I have never had any shots or therapy of any kind. The first time I hurt it I got an xray that showed the issue, but I wont let anyone cut on my back. I would have to not be able to walk at all or be in constant pain before I did any kind of surgery.

Mine isnt as serious as other peoples. I'm weird because I can pick up heavy items and it doesn't bother me, but if I plant my legs and push hard to move something it causes my spine to compress and puts me down for days and suffer pain for weeks until the pain goes away.

One issue is that most people dont keep the muscles that surround the spine strong as they get older and then they will do something like helping someone move or some kind of activity that causes the spine to take the brunt of the weight damaging it. In a young person though it could be hereditary or just an accident that does the damage.

I hate it for your son because it's a miserable ass pain that you almost cant get any relief from. The only way o get mine to stop hurting is to take anti-inflammatory medications as I can and daily stretching. This may sound weird, but yoga is amazing for your body.

Yeah, he's too young and strong to suffer from this. I have taken a bunch of NSAIDs over the years for my back (bad lift) . But, now I'm concerned about the long term liver effects for him. He won't keep up the therapy regimen. Then again, it seems to hurt worse on the days he has to work. ;^)

Part of being a kid, I guess, but here’s where Tough-Love Mom pulls on her boxing gloves! ;-)

It’s preparation for the rest of the not-so-fun stuff that awaits all of us as we grow up. It’s a good lesson that (1) things can be overcome but (2) there isn’t an easy way to do so.

Good luck on the MRI. Do you have one of those high deductible health plans? How close are you to meeting this year’s out of pocket? Would it make more sense (financially, not for health) to delay until January or whenever your plan year starts?

Yep. High deductible. And I've made some bad decisions on managing my health plans. I won't go into detail, but, I sure could have used some adult supervision this year. Next year's ACA plans are going to be more severe than this year's,
too.(I've already enrolled)

^^^ That looks a little self-righteous on re-reading. Sorry about that.
I fractured my right wrist about 25 years ago around Christmas. After recovering from the surgery and getting all the spikes and whatnot out, I started PT/OT in February. The cold made rehab really painful, especially the gadget that they strapped my arm into and made it bend back and forth. After a particularly miserable session where I pretty much ended up quietly crying, I refused to do it any more.

So surprise, surprise, I now have greatly reduced range of motion in my right hand and wrist, affecting piano and guitar playing along with stupid everyday tasks like carrying heavy, awkward objects.

Now I wish that someone had kicked my ass and made me not only endure, but push harder, since I sure wasn’t going to come up with that on my own. Shoulda woulda coulda.

I work in (oops, I’m retired from) healthcare, and I’m still baffled. These things are hard to understand, and that is NOT accidental.

Good news is, if this holds up in the courts, this will be a game changer for consumers and their health care:

Eh I dont see that changing much. As long as we have a for-profit healthcare system it's going to be the same song and dance. I saw an article the other day of a woman who had a baby and was left with an almost 900k hospital bill. We are literally the only civilized country still doing it like this. Sad.

This one? Canadian who took a vacation to Hawaii very late in her pregnancy, had an early birth and spent two months in the hospital?

I didn't read it that way. But, while my older son listens to his parents (or acts like it) this one is the contrary variety. He's at a bad age to be taking and following directions. Relief should be just a click away.

I am a big believer in PT. But as you stated it takes full on commitment and a lot of grinning and swearing. It was my knee and all the way from learning to walk again to full bend. Now I dont have any issues.

(Not necessarily for you) The idea with PT is to build the muscles to support whatever is the issue. But you have to build and train them right or your old habits go back to the issue. If they say 6 months, do 6, 2? To do the full 2

Unlike a lot of other stuff it's not a short term fix or relief so it's not popular in our society. But it's about as close to self help as you can get. Vs surgery or life time dependency on drugs or weekly trips to a chiropractor.

Sorry to hear about his injury. I have been there. I ruptured a disc in my lower back. It was leaking fluid on my spinal cord. I tried the shots. The first one worked for about a week. The second one helped for about a month. The third one didn't help at all. I went to the Laser Spine Institute. They fixed my back. But, they have gone out of business. I also have a inversion table. It works. You have to use it everyday. I recommend using it first thing in the morning and at night. I also sleep with a pillow between my knees. It takes the pressure off the lower back. Hope this helps. I feel for him.
