I guess you are correct but all of those guys moved on to other programs and worked under other HC's before getting a shot at a head coaching gig. Dantonio was a DB coach with Saban before moving onto DC at Ohio State then as a HC at Cincinnati. Fisher was an OC/QB coach with Saban but left for FSU and worked with Bowden for 3-4 years before getting the HC gig there. Muschamp was a DC at Auburn then Texas before getting a shot with Florida. I'm sure that working with Saban was a big asset but the Dooley and Sunseri flops make me worry about trying out another Saban assistant who hasn't proven that he can be successful without Saban.

Big difference in the Kirbster and Muschamp. Willie actually ran his own defense for senile old Crack Clown. Kirby simply implements Saban's defense and holds his clipboard.
If we only got a coordinator,it better be Gus Malzahn. That's the only non-Vol I would go for.

He could be but this program can not have another experiment. We are at a point if we cant win soon we wont ever recover. Each year the value of UT football is going down, we need a winner in here to bring us back to prominence.

I believe Hart intended to make Smart UTs next coach as of the end of last season. I think he figured if Dooley failed this year, he'd bring him in for 2013, which is why he hired (even though he claims hes never hired assistant coaches) Sal and Ansley so he'd have some staff in place aiready, making the transition easier. In one of the Gruden threads it was said Hart was torn over the Gruden deal because he had made promises to two asistants. I believe those 2 were Sal and Ansley, promised they'd be kept if Dooley was fired planning on hiring Smart as the next coach. Not sure if Sals defense or a deal with Gruden ended that idea, probably both.

I believe this is right on the money. I don't think Smart happens now because of the train wreck that was Sal's defense.
