Is Lou Holtz claim to fame just talking funny oops I mean motivating?

0-11 his first season.

Won 9 games his 2nd yr, 8 games his 3 rd yr

Beat Ohio State in back to back bowl games (first time in school history IIRC).

SCar was worse than Kentucky when Holtz took that job. He couldn't sustain it, but he improved that program a lot.

Most people forget that SC was god awful just like Bammers forget they have had a few runs of being bad. Holtz was a solid coach with a NC on his resume. His biggest fault is he's a homer for ND and SC. He can't stand UT, I guess it's over the Miracle in South Bend (was he the coach?). He seems like a solid guy who loves football but he just has a slight speech issue.

Lou was a great coach. No question.

However, if the OP is a youngster, I could see how he might not realize how good Lou was. Holtz's on camera persona is a cartoon character. He is a joke, and it's totally intentional. Unfortunately, his post-coaching career had begun to tarnish his impressive legacy.

Lou also said that South Carolina must have the cleanest houses in all of America; because all of their trash was in the ditches.

I loved him so for saying that....

Lou Holtz was a great coach, anyone that says otherwise must be under 20. My question has always been how did lowly South Carolina get lucky enough to get two amazing hires back to back in Holtz and Spurrier?

It wasn't luck. They, USCe, made a conscious decision to do everything they can to become successful in football.

Yup, they were sick of the Brad Scotts of the world.

Paul Dietzel coached there from 1966-1974. Before SC he had previously coached at Army, and won a NC and multiple SEC Championships at LSU. Out of 9 seasons at SC, only 3 of them produced winning records.

There was some luck involved in Spurrier's availability. If he had been successful with the Redskins in '02-'03 he would still be there and the Cocks would likely have hired Skip Holtz to replace his dad.
