Is Our Offensive Line Actually Any Good?

They are terrible. Might as well put the backups in, cause it worked so good for the qb situation.

6 likes? This horribly unclever and uninsightful comment got six likes?

The above post is bad, and the poster should feel bad, and six others of you should feel even worse.

It wouldn't be elite, but it'd be better than it is now.

But are the running backs different now than they were last year? Is the offensive line not the same as it was last year?

I mean, Bray was throwing the ball 40+ times a game last year. It wasn't as if defenses were keying on the run.

Tyler Bray is WAAAYYYYYY better than Jonathan Crompton.

And Justin Hunter and Patterson are either as good as or better than D-Mo. But there are two of them, while there was just one D-mo.

Bryce Brown was injured.

Hardesty was better than our current running backs but let's not pretend that he's Eric Dickerson. He's a third string RB.

And if our offensive linemen were good then wouldn't they make our mediocre running backs look better? If they're not making them look better than can you actually conclude that they're good?

Im not arguing the point of who is better, the op was talking about the Sullin twins, I advised him of the talent on that team and the lack of talent on this years team.

Did I not say CP was the most Dynamic player to ever play at UT.

Brown was the second leading rusher on the 2009 team.

Neal and Lane are not in the same area code as Hardesty and Brown.

We are averaging 200 yards per game rushing with below average backs so does that answer your question.

Barry Sanders played for the Detroit Lions had probably some of the worst lines in the NFL and everyone knew he was getting the ball but guess what he was ELITE and no team could stop him so was it the line that made him look good or did he make his line look good?

Watch some Elite RB's in college and see how many 1 on 1 battles they win and then watch neal and lane. How many times have we seen neal and lane need to beat 1 person and couldn't do it.

I like Chaney, and I love Pittman, but Mike and Mahoney have been with Butch all of his years as a head coach. He's bringing stability with him. Worley simply can't throw accurately and he doesn't posses elite arm strength. Worley has to build some confidence and relationships with our WRs so next year we can win 7-8 games some how.

the thing i'm wondering about,is will there scheme of football translate to the SEC ?and I'm like others,i would have liked Pittman to have stayed

the OL would be looking better if he had of stayed,at least i think so from the comfort of my recliner :)

they were really good pass blocking last year and they are struggling this year ,so it has to be the new coach or scheme ?they have never been a good run blocking line and it is showing again,or is it the new coach or scheme ?

it is hard to say either way,but they have had to many coaches and schemes thrown at them, that we can agree on

Yes. They're excellent as pass protection and pretty okay at run blocking. Appearances will continue to deceive because our quarterbacks are not good enough at the moment.

They could be really good if they would get their mind right. As big and strong as they are should be dominating most defensive lines. I think we'll see them dominate the South Alabama line and we'll score a lot of points.

People tend to associate age and experience with automatically being good. That sometimes is not the case, such as with the Vol O-line. I'm sure everyone knows someone at work who has been around forever and is still not good at their job.

in 2012 against florida we averaged 3.0 ypc and that was with Bray, CP, Hunter and Rivera.

2013 against florida we averaged 2.9 ypc with no passing threat.

florida in 2 games had given up only 2 3rd conversions and we had 5

it is hard for any team in the SEC to be 1 dimensional

Tyler Bray is WAAAYYYYYY better than Jonathan Crompton.

Crompton was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round (168th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bray went undrafted.

Obviously the folks that get paid to determine whose better didn't agree with you.

Might as well throw the entire team under the bus then, based on recent play, not just the o/line.

Best I can tell, CBJ is not following his stated policy of adjusting the O to the strengths of his personel.

If UT were running LSU's O with this veteran O-line, then the team and the QB's would look much better right now. Use the 6th O lineman as a TE, line them all up in a 3 point stance and pound away. Wouldn't be sexy, but it would play to our strengths IMHO. It would minimize the reads of inexperienced quarterbacks and protect the new receiver corps by asking less of them.
