As many big plays we give up, experience doesnt catch them. Speed.

Did we miss them due to speed or experience though? As one poster pointed out we've had a disproportionate amount of both going on. Out of position and slow.

In terms of college only, speed is most important until you get to the elite stage like Bama, LSU, FSU, etc are at, then experience and coaching plays a big part in winning. All the elite teams have elite speed, but it's the little things that win you big games against big opponents.

I think what separates the elite teams is actually the ability to have very fast AND very large athletes. I think coaching is a good ways down the list.

As we approach the opener and optimism is highest I was thinking about what is new this year. Aside from the obvious, a second year in Butch's system. As I see it we swapped experience (starts) for speed. For the most part posters seem optimistic with that. In truth since it is a second year in the system maybe the experience didn't count anyway? It seems debatable. My question is with all other things being equal in CFB and the SEC in particular which is more important, Speed or Experience? Ability or skill is kind of a gray area as it relates to speed so I am not trying to muddy the waters by including that.

I don't think that there is a clear cut answer on this. In a lot of instances, especially at the skill positions, speed can go a long way in making up for issues that are caused by lack of experience. In the past few years, Tennessee has had experience at various positions but if technique wasn't perfect then the experience didn't matter much because they were slow. Where experience comes in the most is with picking up tendencies and knowing how to react in different environments and being able to remain as even keeled as possible. Just my two cents.

I agree. I think confidence is often a byproduct of experience. I think confidence is actually the desired result. I believe our experience was there but confidence was not. In that regard I think it's very possible a less experienced team 118 could he more confident and effective than say a more experienced team 117. If your experience is in getting beaten, what do you really know or learn?

When we played against really fast teams like Auburn, Oregon, and Bama, last year, they easily outran our defense and the games turned into blowouts. But when we played slower teams like WKU, UGA, and USCe we were more competitive with them. It didn't matter what angles we took against the first batch of teams, we were going to get beat badly because of our lack of speed. Against the second group, we were still slower than them overall, but it wasn't as dramatic in comparison.

inexperienced speed > slow experience

like one poster said, experienced speed preferable

There's a difference between having football speed and track speed. Our players were poorly coached before Jones came around, so we had slow upperclassmen who played like freshmen. We need a perfect mix of experience and speed.

Oregon would be #1 every year if only speed mattered.

As of Late, the Vols defense has been extremely slow by SEC standards as the record indicates. The Vol's scored almost 38pts/game and still couldn't win in 2012?

Example-- Speed---- Oregon Ducks. They are a good team with descent talent and mechanics, but correct me if I am wrong in that I do not believe they are bringing in top 10 recruiting classes each year.... they are bringing in SPEED every year.... If you are a star gazer, you could take last year's game and we actually matched up pretty well star vs star give or take a few kids they had.... one of the biggest glaring differences besides being a little more experienced was they had SPEED across the board and we did NOT....

If you ain't first, your last

We've chased too many people the last few years. Bring in the speed and by the sophomore year they are experienced.
