Is Strong worth 18 Million?

The same ones begging for the Gruden hire are the ones saying Strong is a great hire no matter the cost. They think recruiting will equal wins. Dooley had top 15 classses and we are the worst team in the last 100 years at UT. If Strong is not allowed to bring his "bag man" Hurtt along then his Miami ties are gone. We would not want Hurtt anywhere near UT anyway. "He recruited well at UF". Who doesn't? This is not going to turn out well.

Well who do you want? Who would make things turn out well?

But there is a huge difference between Jones and Strong. Lville was 9-15 the 2 years before Strong arrived. Jones walked in to a pre-built ptogram by a coach who is now playing for the Natl at ND who NOBODY ever thought would ever get back to national prominance. Strong's 10-2 looks alot better to me than Jones'.

Head to head Jones has beat Strong 2 out of 3. Strong won this year by 3.

Strong worth 2X the salary??? Not to me.

Crazy money for Strong. Definitly a decent coach and a potential up and coming coach, but for 4M / year, you are getting into the top tier coaches of the SEC.

Strong is not worth 4mil / year.

I have stated it several times. There is a whole group I would hire before over paying Charlie Strong 4 million bucks a year.

I would have offered:

Patterson 4.75
Gundy 4.25
Mora Jr 3.8
Fulmer 2.5
Davis 2.75
Petrino 2.2-2.5
Jones 2.25

I would have offered Strong 2.8 a year for 6 years. if he wanted to coach in the SEC, that is the offer. That would have been a half million dollar raise and a big raise for his staff. He says No, or UL matches it, I move on.

Another thing to consider. strong has a 2.5-3 million dollar buyout. Fulmer, Petrino, and Davis do not. What kind of coordinators could you get with an extra 3 million? Here is a hint, there are maybe 5 in all of college football who make over 1 million.

Lets see, the university frees up 18 mllion and we offer that amount for a coach. Now we know what we are willing to spend and know why we didn't get Gruden.

It's like Hart is trying to buy a coach on eBay. Some other joker is bidding the price up way beyond what the coach is worth, and Hart is compulsively determined to win at all costs. In the end, we're stuck with something we really didn't want, had to overpay to get and would like to return, but can't. Then after a few years of liking it less and less, we'll have to pay to get rid of it.

Is this 3.5 guaranteed??? I wouldn't think so but wondering. If it has bowl, conference championship, and NC bonuses in there than UT would be a bad deal IMO. Longer and harder to get those bonuses.

With butch Davis going to Colorado (if espn is right) (he says no) then this would be a big sign for strong staying at ul.

Just IMO that's all...

Arkansas got a coach who has been to 3 rose bowls in 3 years for 3.2 and we are going to go to 4 million for Strong?

4 million bucks a year, 3.5-4 million for a staff, and a 3 million dollar buyout. 11 million bucks in year 1, 8 million+ a year for the next 4-5.

Spending that type of money, we could hire any one of Davis, Jones, Fulmer, or Petrino and then hire the highest paid OC & DC in college football. We could keep Pittman, and Graham. We could add Shannon and Steele to the defensive staff. We could actually do all this and still put a chunk of change in our pocket. How does this not make sense???

The only viable options on the list is Mora Jr & Jones. Paterson out. Gundy Out. Fulmer (regardless of his caliber) would not be brought back. Davis & Petrino have huge concerns from NCAA & moral perspective (which is hard to touch after Kiffin and us still being on probation).

That's what I'm trying to stress to people. Strong might be the best name still left. Mora Jr. would be a solid hire, if he were interested.

Davis was cleared of all NCAA issues. Petrino has NEVER had NCAA issues. Moral? Maybe so. As most pople know, just about ANY college coach would be questioned about their "morals" if all their doings came to light. These are football coaches, not pastors. Making excuses to over pay for a coach just speaks to where we are as a program. The fact he is turning it down, even says more.

I would take Davis. He was pretty high on my list honestly. Just putting myself in the AD's shoes... not sure if he'd pull the trigger. But after the news about Strong... i'm a lot more open. I can tell ya that
