I will say almost every player knows where they stand. I cannot guarantee every player knows but all my son's friend's except one knows where they stand and that is between him and the coach. And they were told at the end of fall meetings. I have seen nothing but honesty from the coaching staff in regards to my son through everything in recruiting and now being on the team through the fall and into the spring in pitching, playing a fielding position, and hitting. They have told him right where he fits in the plan and where he stands with the coaches and team. Just because kids get redshirted or cut does not mean coaches are lying. I know several players at UT and other schools that were told in recruiting, we will bring you in and give you a chance to compete. If you do what you have done in the past in HS and travel, we will have a spot for you this spring. If you do not because of injury or not continuing to compete at the level you have in the past, then we will redshirt you and give you a chance next year. Some that are not there now and in the past were given a chance to stay and redshirt or saw the writing on the wall and realized they would not get to play this spring and left. When my son was being recruited, we looked at what each offer had in relationship to LHP's, guys who were 2-way players and how many players my son would have to compete with just to get on the field then he made his choice. He had offers from other schools where he would have to beat out 10 LHP's just to get to pitch. He had offers where they guaranteed playing time at smaller schools and others that said come in on a preferred walk-on position and you will be guaranteed a spot your freshman fall but after that you have to earn it. We can only keep 35 in the spring. Every kid has to do their own due diligence and research the past and the future. How bad do you want to go to X school and what are you willing to risk. There are no guarantees in college sports. I've coached enough guys that have had to make the tough decision as to what offer to accept from walk-on, to preferred walk-on, to scholarship and in the rare case a full scholarship. I would say the only guys who are guaranteed a spot in today's world are full scholarship guys which is the rare occasion.
If a player is a freshman outfielder, it will be very hard to get playing time this year with the stellar talent that is there in the outfield. To me that is not the coaches' fault. They recruited good players and some got very good in the past year. Only three positions and 8-10 strong competitors for those three positions. I would not be surprised if they play 7-8 in the outfield this year.
I believe the roster is set but has not been put on the website. But it will have to be set by 12:01 tonight.
