I'm not a football guru and I wouldn't even know what the blitz is called...BUT I re-watched the GA game and they have 2 pull out and 2 blitz on the each side. Not sure if it's the scheme that hurts us or our players just couldn't pick up the blitzes. What type of offensive play beats this call?

Ahhhh......the ole pull out method. Brings back memories.

but seriously, who are the ones dropping back in coverage? Tackles? Because that would be rare.....or we talking a zone blitz of some kind with 7 or 8 crowding the line and random blitzing and rest falling back into coverage?

GA beat us with a superior D-line. Our QB didn't have enough time to get the ball downfield and even when he did, our guys were either getting held or the throw was slightly off.
This^ & the crowd was so loud we went on a timed count & the D-line timed it as well or better than our O-line. In fact watching re-play looked like UGA jumped early 3 times with no calls. They were in Hookers face every throw and took HH out of his comfort zone,
Kudos to UGA & their Fans brought it. Vol fans time to put up.

I would love nothing more than to put them back in their place this year. Let's have another Dobbsnail boot!

Crashing the line with DTs and blitzing LBs into the running lanes has been Stop the Spread 101 since the SF 49ers were using the spread in the 1971 NFL season.
If it works, defense wins.

Hard to say the officiating was deliberately biased in that one. Us not being assessed with a safety when Carter stripped Hooker in the end zone is as nonsensical a call as you'll ever see. The fact that went our way, even after replay was amazing. Of course, as luck would have it, we probably would have been better off with a safety because they scored on a long pass on the next play after the punt.

I hope Erik Ainge remembers to keep his mouth shut this year when we go to Florida and Tuscaloosa

The real problem against UGA is that they have been able to stop the run and get pressure without loading the box or blitzing, that's how they covered us so well last year. I know we got guys loose a couple of times, but by then Hooker was so frequently getting moved off his spot and knocked down that he was just rattled. So when they do blitz it can come as more of a surprise because they don't have to. It's athleticism mostly that has done us in against them. I give Kirby credit to the extent that Saban has the same kind of athletes and hasn't done near as well, but the reason no one else has really replicated what UGA has done against us defensively is that no one else can (other than maybe Bama since they've got rid of Golding). It's way more of a Jimmy and Joe's thing than a scheme thing.

Disguised blitzes are everyone's kryptonite. Your QB and OL have protection calls. You are relying on them to recognize it and call proteaction to that side. It's a guess at best unless you can recognize some kind of tendency.

That would be great!

But would love for us to embarrass them! Hope CJH finds that soft spot like he did with Hyatt against Bama! Plus I think our D will be much better and they could potentially not be as lucky on their QB play this year.

I haven’t watched the replay lately, but the amount of PI’s they let go on Ringo was ridiculous. He mugged everyone he covered….ALL DAY LONG

For most offenses there is no 1 blitz that they can’t handle. The rare exception to that rule is A gap pressure from a bear front on passing plays when under center (your center takes one A and your back has to take the other but the LB is closer to the QB than your RB is, so he never gets there to make the block) which is why so many teams have moved to the gun.

Without seeing the exact blitz and coverage it’s hard to say but here’s a few quick examples of things thatre universally considered “blitz beaters”: quick screens (bubble, swing, etc), delayed screens, slants, fades, or uncovered throws

There is no "magic formula" to beating Heupel's offensive scheme.

Having said that, our O Center has to recognize D formations and make the proper line call for the O formation in response to what he sees. Further, for example if our QB believes a D press plus blitz is coming, he can audible out of the current play into a hot read (e.g. slant or bomb to a certain receiver). However, the D can also threaten one formation but then actually bring another. Thus, it's really just a constant game of cat and mouse between the O & D Coordinators.

So it's not that Georgia found some magic, they just had good D schemes and NFL level talent to execute them.

This is why Cooper Mays' knowledge and experience is extremely important to us... and of course Joe.

He was a big cornerback, who was really fast. You can jam receivers within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage and he did that all day, physically disrupting our guys routes. We normally don't see a guy that big who has a faster 40 time than Hyatt. That unique athletic combination had a lot more to do with it than officiating.

I believe what you're referring to is a "sugar blitz". Basically a fake blitz but any 4 on the LOS can rush. OL and RBs just have to pick it up and QB go through their reads

I in no way blame officiating for the loss to Georgia, we had plenty of deficiencies of our own that they didnt need the officials help. However, there was holding beyond 5 yards by Ringo on several plays and he was only flagged once for it. Tillman is a better receiver than Ringo is a corner. This is why in the NFL Ringo is transitioning to safety. Ringo doesnt have the hips to play corner at the highest level of play. When Tillman would break on Ringo, he would create separation due to Ringos slower hips that Ringo had to grab him in order to negate. Ringo is a heck of an athletic specimen and I believe will be a top tier safety, corner just isnt his natural position and it showed when he went against NFL caliber receivers.

Trust me, film is highly dissected especially after a loss. If there was a certain scheme that caused problems, it’ll be looked at heavily. If we got out muscled that’s just the way it is.

2 things will beat Heupels offense.
1 - having an NFL level roster across the defense (loss to UGA)
2 - Getting in a situation where the offense has to start forcing itself (loss to USCe)

That's it.

Yeah all I know is that the 2 fake blitz in middle and then 2 blitz on the sides. At least that what it looks like.

And they were able to do that because they had the superior defensive players
