Who whoa whoa.
Let's get our facts straight.
First, the article states that community groups like ACORN might be eligiible for funds, not that this is an earmark for ACORN. In fact, as I read the article, any community organization -- liberal or conservative -- would be eligible.
Second, what the article is really about -- and I happen to agree -- is that the bill has a large number of special line appropriations to various special interests and that the appropriations aren't all that much about stimulus.
This is the exact same problem I had with the bill passed at the behest of Bush. And at the time I said so, which is that there were a lot of House Republicans at that point who demanded various special interest dollars in exchange for their support. Now, it would appear that there are folks on the other side of the aisle who are demanding their own pork in order to support the bill.
Both sides are wrong on this point and, as I said at the time, I wish someone would publish a list of the House members (Democrat AND Republican) who have used this as a mechanism to curry favor within their own districts as the midterms approach in 2010.
But let's not make this a partisan issue by raising the specter of ACORN awash in billions because, first, that is not accurate at all, and second, it misses the point, which is that the bailous bills under both administrations are loaded down with a bunch of pork projects demanded by both Republicans and Democrats and for all the wrong reasons.
