I think from what we've seen it just may be.

the loss of Simon really hurt us in the middle, but are backfield really sucks, and tackiling for the whole team (except Burnett) is pitiful! We are also the slowest east to west I can remember in a while.

This years defense has not been a normal John Chavis defense.

Usually at the start of the year the defense is the least of our worries now I can not say that.

:cross:
Lets hope they grow up and play this week or it will be 5 in a row

I don't necessarily think so. They are young, and they have looked awful, but remember last years D was pretty pitiful at the beginning of the year last year. They were awful till the Miami game when they came out of nowhere and won the game for us somehow. The D has been on the decline for the last few years imo.

Seems like the past few years we have had to rely upon our defense to keep us in the games and provide the spark to win. Now we have to rely upon our offense.

The telltale play of the game was one of the first passes by Auburn...
Johnson ( i think it was) had it picked... Auburn guy just took it away from him. it was taking 2 or 3 people to get Brown and Williams down, and still they were dragging these 2 or 3 about 5 or 6 yards more most of the time. Our defense looked weak physically at times. and FFS quit leading with your forearms. These guys were not going down from just being hit.

Watching our DBs, behind the reciever trying to catch up for most every reception, was depressing to say the least. 2 guys on a reciever, but he has them burnt so bad, and we defensed it so poorly, that they were gonna get the ball no matter.

The Vols have given up 6 rushing TDs and 6 passing TDs this season. That averages to about 17 each over an 11 game season.

Passing TDs given up
'92- 12
93- 7
94- 8
95- 17
96- 12
97- 11
98- 12
99- 15
00- 17
01- 17
02- 9
03- 10

Rushing TDs given up
'92- 8
93- 8
94- 12
95- 12
96- 4
97- 11
98- 5
99- 3
00- 7
01- 8
02- 12
03- 16

Losses through the years where defense was key:
1995 Florida, loss 62-37
1996 Florida, loss 35-29
1997 Florida, loss 33-20
1997 Nebraska, loss 42-17
2000 Kansas State, loss 35-21
2001 LSU, loss 31-20
2002 Florida, loss 30-13
2002 Alabama, loss 34-14
2002 Miami, loss 26-3
2002 Maryland, loss 30-3

2003 Georgia, loss 41-14

You guys can be the judge, but when if the Vols finish with 4 lopsided losses like 2002, or give up 62 points to an opponent.... then I might agree that the defense is the worst under Chavis. Until then, I'll go with "this defense is young and getting better."

Agreed. From an outside perspective, though there are some vets on the defense this is definatley a rebuilding year for a program that is historically know for veteran defenses.

I will agree that the defensive secondary is very weak and needs some work. However, and I can count them if you wish, Williams and Brown had plenty of runs for minus yards, zero yards, and 1,2, or 3 yards. They did make a few big plays... but there is no way that I thought that they would be stopped on every play... they are just that good. Auburn averaged only 3.5 yards per rush attempt in the game.

Back to the defensive secondary.

Auburn had 5 plays in the first half that totaled 178 yards. Those five plays accounted for more than half of Auburn's 333 total yards in the first half. The other 60 plays in the game netted only 222 yards.

Against La Tech, the defense gave up five plays that totaled 182 yards. The other 57 plays netted only 148 yards.

^ YES, it appears that I am not the only person who noticed UT's game picked up later in the game. It was too little too late, but the Vols DID COMPETE ON THE SAME LEVEL AS AU. Just not for long enough.

I am afraid it has more to do with Tubberville taking his foot off the gas.

I can guarantee you that any good coach teaches his team to play their absolute hardest until the end of the game, no matter what the circumstances. Unless it's an absolute annihilation within the two minute mark, no player will stop before the clock reaches 0.

Auburn's first possession of the 2nd half started with 3 pass attempts. Williams and Brown were much less affective in the 2nd half. I don't think Tuberville is smart enough to know where the gas pedal is. I'm sure he remembered all too well last season when Auburn had a 28-7 lead in the 4th quarter dwindle down to 28-21 with the Vols throwing at his endzone. Let off the gas.... I don't think so. Chavis has always made the halftime adjustments... its just too bad the Vols gave up the 2 touchdowns in the last 3 minutes of the first half. 17-3 would much more manageable than the 31-3. All you have to do is look at the Florida-Arkansas matchup from this past weekend, where the Razorbacks pulled within a touchdown of the Gators, after the Gators were up big.

When the game is in hand, a coach will let off. See Spurrier in 1996.

See Lou Holtz 1991.

When your offense turns the ball over near the endzone, of course the other team is going to have less yards. What are the points off of turnovers for Auburn?

You also have to consider that Auburn played it pretty close to the vest in the 2nd half after building a friggin' 28 pt halftime lead.

I guess if there's anything positive, at least the defense didn't completely lay down and get run over once the game got out of hand.
