I remember a pretty massive airlift from the U.S. to Israel in '67. Israel would have long since been overrun if not for the U.S.A.

Plano Vol "I remember a pretty massive airlift from the U.S. to Israel in '67. Israel would have long since been overrun if not for the U.S.A."

Hmmm..or you are thinking of the supplies we agreed to sell Israel after the war when we really felt guilty for doing jack****.

Six Day War - 6 Day war - Definition, History

"Johnson had taken four or five days to reply to P.M. Eshkol's earlier urgent plea for help sent May 30, the reply was not a cause for optimism.

Nonetheless, President Johnson did not change his policy. He finally replied to Levy Eshkol's letter on June 3. He said nothing. He reiterated the same points he had made to Abba Eban earlier. In fact, he included the same written document. When war broke out on June 5, State Department Spokesman Robert McCloskey said, in an infamous communique, was to say that "the U.S. position is neutral in word, thought and deed.""

1967 is the year the USA begin truly helping Israel not by giving them anything but by selling them what they needed without the limits they put on other countries. That is the main "help" Israel gets. Israel pays market for these things and prior to the War in 1967 they did not get it. There tanks were German made during the war fyi.

I seem to recall the Israelis having to play a Cold War game of gaining support from the Soviets or the Americans. They would "befriend" one side to get concessions from the other. In order to survive, Israel had to deal back and forth. Any aid gained from the US was only after either heavy Jewish lobbying OR the Americans fearing Israel turns close to the Soviets. It was not like the US backed Israel the entire time and inundated them with weapons and cash.

I do remember them paying reparations for the USS Liberty.

They paid 13 million 6 to the US I believe and the rest to the families. The ship had been given but failed to receive orders to move away from war zone. Israel mistakenly and regrettably misidentified the ship. It was one of the saddest yet not heavily publicized moment in US/Israeli relations. Why do you bring that up?
