It is time to do away with split conference championships.

Regular season ties could be broken with a one game playoff. But then which team gets to play at home? Or is it on a neutral court? But what happens in there is a 3-way tie?

Tennessee would have several more NCAAT wins if there weren’t conference tournaments. The thug at Florida doesn’t end Fulkerson’s season in 2021. Plus in 2021 Oregon State instead goes to the NIT. In 2019 Kyle Alexander could probably play against Loyola-Chicago instead of aggravating his injury by playing 5 games in about 8 days prior to the Sister Jean game. Also, UT played on 3 consecutive days in the SECT 3x less than a week before NCAATs.

They better not call it them conference tournaments. When the 6 best teams don’t participate, then the 7th place team or below doesn’t get to be called the conference tournament champion.

The Play-In Tournament maybe.
Of course they wouldn’t be considered a conference champion lol. Call it whatever you want to call it but yeah it’s essentially a play in tournament.

Imo, conference tournaments should be done away with.

Let the regular conference play determine the champion.

Gives the teams an extra week of practice for the NCAA Tournament.
I think most basketball purists consider winning the regular season champion as the champion of the conference. That tournament champions get the auto birth is less significant, especially in seedings

Completely agree: Ditch the season-ending tournament. It's a complete waste of time and completely boring. Bad
teams or teams that haven't done enough to merit an NCAA bid don't deserve another chance after a very long regular
season schedule. It's too much--and you just tire out the teams who've already qualified for the big dance. Get rid of it.

Simple odds say that a team winning its conference tournament (3 games) is less likely to win the NCAA tournament (6 games). To win both thats 9 straight wins against top competition and 3 of those back to back to back. I came to this feeling after seeing first hand that the NCAA seeding is done prior to these conference tournaments, adjusting only for surprises. What's the purpose of them, a banner? Get ready for the NCAA and let the teams without bids have a tournament. Yeah, some team might get lucky occasionally and steal a birth, did they really deserve it base on their season?

I've not gone back to look at this, but someone can. I'd venture to guess a good chunk of ncaa national champions also won their conference tournaments. The issue is every conference tournament champion-1 has to lose for the one conference tournament champion to win. That's why the winning percentage must be abysmal.

Hopefully that makes as much sense in writing as it does in my head. Really good teams win. And you have to be a really good team to win a national championship. Hard to win 9 in a row, but if can win 3 or 4 in a row in your conference tournament, it generally bodes well.

On the other hand, we only play Auburn once and it’s on Knoxville. Among the top conference championship contenders, our schedule might be the most favorable. If we can split with Kentucky and beat Auburn, we’re probably champs. If we take Bama in Tuscaloosa, we’re almost certainly champs. Those 4 games are the key.
We play UK, Alabama, Texas A&M, USC, and Vandy twice.

Auburn plays Alabama, MSU, UGA, Ole Miss, and Vandy twice.

UK plays UT, UF, Arkansas, MSU, and Vandy twice.

Bama plays Auburn, UT, UF, LSU, and MSU twice.

As the season has played out so far, I’d say we have the toughest of that group.

Most common sense people view the split titles are ceremonious… the fact we still claim one after we got our butts smacked by Auburn a few years ago in the head to head is absurd.
If the schedules were only the same…

It’s also important where you play the teams you only play once. Auburn doesn’t get a chance to even the score against Tennessee at Auburn. That matters.

Sure, but there are 17 other games, and the schedule matters. We play UK every year in basketball twice like we play Bama in football.

You can’t ever have a tiebreaker champion when everyone plays different schedules. It’s why the tournament committee also doesn’t care where a team places in their conference. They look at SOS and wins.

I’m not denying that. In fact, I’m agreeing with that because I was responding to a post that only lists the teams each contender plays twice by saying the location of the teams they play once also matters.

We just went in circles. That was my post responding to you when you mentioned we get an advantage playing Auburn at home. I responded by saying we get a disadvantage by the 4 teams we play twice that Auburn doesn’t play.

Especially after Vols won the SEC tournament and it somehow didn’t improve their seeding at all!
I mean just get players healthy at that point. But I do love single elimination tournaments

Auburn and Alabama both have far easier schedules than us.

Go to four four team divisions. Play the teams in your divison twice and everybody else once. No regular season champion. Let the four teams play a playoff at the end of the seaon and crown the champion from that.

Don't be too quick crown us conference champions. We did lose to Mississippi State and that loss is not looking so good anymore. They are 1-3 since they played us. We also have to play Texas A&M and South Carolina twice. Both of those teams are very dangerous at home.
Mississippi state just beat auburn and are
14-6 with two wins over top 10 teams.

Guaranteed we played a tougher schedule. Just saying that I have no clue.

I think that FL and LSU would need to be in the same division and ut-A and TxAM should be as well (probably Ark/Tx/AM/OK instead of Mizz - SWC plus the RRR).
