From TENNESSEAN.com

The Tigers (4-5) were playing without their best player, senior tailback DeAngelo Williams. The nation’s leading rusher missed the game with an ankle injury. He was dressed and on the sideline, but didn’t play.

I wonder what the outcome would have been if Williams had played. We'll never know but with the points that Kentucky and Vanderbilt put up today...I just don't know...if you know what I mean.(

Had Williams been in there we'd probably have lost. But we could say had so-and-so been in various games we could have won, etc. We won and tack that in the W column. I agree it was not pretty. But when it comes to saving face people will look at the score and stats over the W though...

The only reason Kentucky and Vanderbilt was high-scoring is because Vanderbilt this year is playing like a third rate Pac-10 team (offense is so-so but probably still the best in the SEC, while they are terrible on D). Vandy's O drops a load on the Wildcats, and UK scores handily because Vandy's D sucks.

Vandy will still be a battle though.

Well, I think that statement usually works when you're talking about certain parts of the offense, etc., but DeAngelo Williams IS Memphis football. We should all be thanking our lucky stars we didn't have to play against Tiger High with him on the field... Memphis is down to their what, 8th string QB?

milo, the thing about Memphis is that it doesn't matter who they have or who we have... it's always close. It would have been a different game but I definitely don't think we would have lost. We prepared for Williams and they threw some things at us in the first half in his absence that we hadn't seen before.

Funny thing is that memphis "8th string qb" could run circles around our starters!!!! I disagree about williams though - had he been in the game they would have been nmore predictable in a lot of situations - so I think that the absence of DeAngelo actually caused us some problems/

yeah I agree..it's like the whole UGA would have beaten UF with Shockley...what most people dont think about the fact that Shockley himself cost UGA the game last time against UF and the game this yr could have been an even bigger margin for UF...you just dont know.

We should. I can't see Kentucky taking us...

I thought Memphis couldn't either but it came down to the last play to almost prove differently....

I think Kentucky and Vandy are both better Memphis. SEC teams just have more talent, they play better teams, have better coaching, etc. There are a few good teams in that conference but in general the SEC is quite a bit tougher. I mean Vandy took Florida to overtime, I just dont see Memphis doing that.

Come on... Memphis is better than Kentucky. Kentucky can game when they want to, but it's still Kentucky. And even in spite of this year, Vandy is still Vandy. Don't get me wrong, SEC is a great conference, but if you think it's amazing top to bottom, you're fooling yourself.

Memphis is 4-5. They arent a very good team in their conference. Vandy has a comparable record in the SEC.

One of our D players said that very thing in a locker room interview. Said he thought Mempho had thrown the ball more than they'd expected and that it took some getting used to.

Vanderbilt's Total Defense is ranked higher than 7 Pac 10 teams Total D.

9 SEC Total Defenses are ranked higher than USC's Total Defense.

And Kentucky's Total Defense, by far the worse in the SEC, ranks higher than 3 Pac 10 teams.

The Pac 10 is "Outdoor Arena Football."

It's not always about the talent level. If it were, UT would be 9-0 (maybe 8-1), and we'd be talking BCS instead of plain old BS. Talent ain't the issue.

It's about heart . And desire. It's conditioning...preparation...focus...intensity...and execution. Those are the things that produce success on the field.

Me? I'd rather have 80 kids from the state of Tennessee who want to win for their school and their state, than 80 blue-chippers who are more worried about what Kiper says than what their head coach says.

Heart. If Vandy and UK bring it, we're in trouble.

Simple as that.

Tell that to an outmaned Va Tech squad when they played Miami. Why can't UT have well coached talent?

CPF would probably prefer to have a team of Tennesseans, problem is there is not enough speed in the state of Tennessee, and the highscool football is not up to par with the rest of the southeast. Speed kills in the SEC.

I hear these arguments about "Kentucky bred" basketball players all the time in Lexington, but it is a coaches responsibility to grab the best talent available from anywhere. IMO recruiting is the only reason CPF still has a job.

Great defense trumps offense everyday... the SEC offenses might be explosive if they played in any other conference.

Yeah, the Pac 10 can light it up in their bowl games they share with the Mountain West Conference.
