I was told the other day by medical staff at my work that they aren't really that effective for prolonged exposure to someone (i.e., hours in close contact), but for incidental contact they can be effective at preventing the spread.

Because there are large numbers of people confined to small areas which leads to outbreaks. The masks do not prevent transmission 100% and aren’t meant to be worn 24/7.

It helps with transmission of any illness, like the flu. Difference is we have never taken these extreme steps to mandate masks and shut down the economy. This isn't just about masks from either side
