It's [not yet] official, Rick Barnes in as head coach

Very safe hire in terms of stability, name recognition, and resume. Not a high ceiling hire IMO, and at 60 years old, he probably has 5-7 years left.

We could do much much worse. At worst, he hopefully puts the program on a solid, winning foundation again.

After 17 years Texas had enough. A younger, up and coming coach must have been too much work for Hart to explore. Age and passion are definite concerns. Barnes is no Larry Brown.

EXCELLENT! I have been reading all these complaints and it does not make sense to me. We have hire someone who has exceptional experience, seemingly good ethics, ties to the University of Tennessee, and wants to come here. I think we are blessed today to have moved on from the last three coaching decisions. Hope all VFLs get behind Rick, let's recruit some great talent, and whoop some wildcats!

The one time in almost a year that I try to start a thread it gets merged.... and someone stole my thread/story and my one chance at e-cred is gone........

:ermm:
Kind of like how I was one of the first to mention Underwood's name, after posting his record (which got merged) someone else started the Brad Underwood thread. Who still is going to be a solid hire.

Very good hire based on the circumstances. He will bring stability to the program and ability to recruit high level talent. He consistently gets his teams into the NCAA tournament and his teams have produced quite a few 1st round draft picks. Maybe he has underachieved with the talented teams he's had, but just consistently getting in the NCAA tourney would be a huge step in the right direction considering we didn't even make the NIT this year. Nobody can fix this program overnight, but I believe with his coaching resume over the years, and the current state of the program here, this is as good a hire as we could have hoped for. If nothing else, at least we don't have to google his name just to find out about what he's achieved.

This is wonderful news. A proven big time coach. He just needs to buy some brighter orange wardrobe and he is ready to go. The man can recruit and coach. This will be good for him, everyone gets stagnant in their jobs, a new adventure will do him good!

I hated him for years after the incident with Dean Smith. Guess I'll need to get over it. Welcome Coach!

Barnes is a guy who can stabilize the program and make it competitive. That is exactly what we need right now. Let's get behind this guy and move forward!

@kbohls: Interesting that Tennessee AD Dave Hart tried to hire Charlie Strong but couldn't get him.

Barnes gives us a proven coach who can stabilize and build this program for the future. In one move we become relevant again.

This is a great hire for us...for all the reasons given..not so much on his achievements with all that talent...but for the other reasons...and no buyout...I don't think at least...This could not have come at a better time for Coach Hart...

...okay? Because Tennessee's current football coach isn't doing just as good of a job if not better at rebuilding the program?
