@ UT...but I'm getting really tired of his bs lately.

"We're gonna watch the film and work like heck to get better."

"Those kids played their rears off today, but we just didn't get it done."

"We were close to having some big plays."

Blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, etc.

I'm not jumping on the fire Fulmer bandwagon, but good grief, this is just pathetic. And Fulmer is ultimately the one to blame for letting things go this far. Look at the way things have gone the last few years. We've been on the verge of this disaster for several years now.

Examples

2003 SC. Carolina takes us to overtime. Lucky to win the coin toss and get the ball second, otherwise, who knows what happens there?

Memphis 1999, 2000, and this year. Yeah, they play us close quite often, but why are we so incompetent against such an inferior opponent?

Vandy last year, and possibly this year. Can't say much here, as we did shut them out 3 years in a row.

UK 2001, 2004. Yes, we won these games, but we had to pull some plays out of our ass at the end to win both.

Just a few examples here of games that could have turned a few decent, good, and outstanding seasons into seasons like we are having this year. Each game is just a play or two away from being an embarrassing loss.

What has given me this attitude, you ask? Fulmer's attitude. Just listen to him on the radio or TV. Acts like nothing is wrong, like things just haven;t gone our way this year. Some things haven't gone our way, that is for sure.
But the maxims that we love to recite before each and every game don't seem to sink in. This one, specifically...Play for and make the breaks and when one comes your way - SCORE. Good teams make their breaks sometimes. Good coaches teach their teams how to make those breaks. We can't do that this year. Unless someone gives us the ball at the opponent's 5 yard line, we can't score. Yes, I know we had a 95 yard drive today. That is DEFINITELY and aberration, not the norm.

It is getting to the point now that UT cannot just out-talent most of their competition anymore. Until Fulmer realizes this, I'm afraid season like this may become the norm, not the exception.

I hope I am wrong about that.

Fulmer better for hope that, too.

You listen to the BB coach Pearl he is extremely forthcoming talking about his players and the team. Last time, I listened he was going into detail about how much stronger a player had gotten, started off benching this, now benches this, worked really hard to get stronger, etc.

I was thinking, I had never heard Fulmer talk about his players like that, what they benched when they got here, what they do now, how hard they worked, etc.

Fulmer thinks he doesnt have to explain things to the fans, all he has to do is quip a few "work like heck to get better", and thats good enough for the vol faithful.

What really was the wake up call for me, was a couple of weeks ago when he said something to the effect UT was 5 or 6 plays away from having a really good year. IMO UT was 5 or 6 plays away from being 1-8, not 8-1 like he thinks.

Then he says something like, you know me I dont make excuses, and then he spends the next 5-10 minutes making excuses about why they lost. Thats not cool.

I don't listen to his postgame BS. Waste of time. All coachs except Spurrier say the same crap. Us older Vol fans remember Bill Battle. What a bore!!

You're dead on about the 1-8 thing. The only team that we beat fairly solidly was Ole Miss. UAB could have beaten us if something went their way, and the LSU game would have been a loss if Jamarcus Russell stays in bounds. Have to think if Nick Saban were still at LSU, that game definitely would have been a loss. So 1-8 is much more likely than 7-2 or 8-1. If our defense had not been so good this year, things would have been even more ugly.

As far as getting breaks, well good teams DO make their own breaks. It is no mistake that certain well coached teams have a good turnover ratio, or have less penalties than their opponents. It is also no secret that you play like you practice, and from what I have heard practices around there are a joke.

Practice is the big mystery because they are closed. I am beginning to wonder if the offense doesn't practice at all. Maybe that is what they are hiding.

I think they sat around reading the preseason magazines and figured they were that good.

I have said this somewhere in this site before. The year that we played Clemson in Atlanta I attended 1 of the practices.I remember thinking to myself that this does not look like a top notched program preparing for a big game. This was the first time I had ever seen them practice before and I was not very impressed. There was many players just goofing off and joking(including starters)and not looking like they were serious about the game.

It is settled. Otis and his dynamite eating goat can go to practice anytime they want.

Part of turning this thing around will be examining practice habits closely, and what does CPF do? Closes practice entirely.

Good post, I think a lot of the people on here that feel that he should be given more time are in denial just like Fulmer. If the vols don't win out, are all of you pro Fulmer folks willing to let this decline continue and give him another year, or two, or three?

not me,as i was watching the game vs memphis with my brother & good friend i told them when it was late in the game that if we lost this game or any of the remaining 2 that CPF needed to fired pronto when leaving the field,im tired of his bs & all the talk of we gotta work harder and all the crap he says, there is no excuse not to blow memphis, vandy,
kentucky, south carolina & uab out, these games should not be close it is a joke!

He's not gonna get fired. Not right now, anyway.

I just wonder if he realizes that something DOES need changing?

I mean, if RS hadn't resigned, would he have let him go at the end of the year? I'm not so sure...

I honestly do not mean this to be a slam on CPF. But I wonder does he sit in his office and stare at the window and think to himself''how did it come to this?...and how do I fix it?'' Is it possible he doesnt know? or is he just a stubborn guy that thinks its a disease that if you ignore itll go away or better yet doesnt exist in the 1st place? Id feel a lot better hearing him say we're FUBAR and Im at a loss as what to do. I think this point speaks to the heart of the problem, he needs to be seen doing something to make it better, or he invites critisism thatll eventually land him a pink slip.

He's had that staff for so long you know it's hard to make changes...especially with the results he's gotten over his career and the relationships he's built with them.

Long relationships are overrated. Just ask my wife.

He's a gator fan, of course he will support him if he loses to Vandy. He wants him around as long as UT can keep him. Don't get to close to the edge of the pond Knocker.
