Report: Hoover plotted mass arrest - US news - Security - msnbc.com

Former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover had a plan to suspend the rules against illegal detention and arrest up to 12,000 Americans he suspected of being disloyal, according to a newly declassified document.

Hoover sent his plan to the White House on July 7, 1950, less than two weeks after the Korean War began. But there is no evidence to suggest that President Harry S. Truman or any subsequent president approved any part of Hoover's proposal to house suspect Americans in military and federal prisons.

Hoover had wanted Truman to declare the mass arrests necessary to "protect the country against treason, espionage and sabotage," The New York Times reported Saturday in a story posted on its Web site.

The plan called for the FBI to apprehend all potentially dangerous individuals whose names were on a list Hoover had been compiling for years.

I read on Hoover's wiki page that he was part African-American and was very ashamed about it so he told everyone he was white. You can tell by his hair and younger pics he has black in him.

Anyways, I was just wondering opinions on him. Until recently I really didn't know much about him except for hearing his name in movies and stuff. I just knew he was head of the CIA or Secret Service or FBI or something.(now I know it's FBI). He seems like the type of guy that you either loved or hated.

I didn't necessarily mean stupid but there is more info at their fingertips than ever before. Even do it the old fashioned way if you're interested in a subject and grab a book. Hard to believe Hoover's name was never brought up in a class before they decided to make a movie about him

Pretty much this. Billy probably slept through history class.

FBI — The Vault

If I remember correctly this has some of Hoover's letters, etc.

CIA FOIA - Special Collections

Those are some FBI/CIA declassified documents. There's some interesting stuff in there.

I had heard this man's name before but really didn't know much about him. I've recently read up on him a little because there is a Clint Eastwood movie about him fixing to hit theaters. What is your opinion on this man?

J Edgar Hoover unlawfully spied on Americans. That's all I need to know.

Think Patroit Act, only on Russians, Homosexuals, and anybody that wasn't a caucasian american.
