westwords.... The Shack hit really was a big deal. Look for Dr. Danny White, as soon as this afternoon, to find a sponsor eager to memorialize the moment – a bronze statue out front or at least a gold coin on the court, marking the very spot where Mashack launched the greatest goal of his life. However, there have been other "miracles" in UT Basketball lore! The amazing Marvin West chronicles the "rest of the story" And More! Click westwords and enjoy a trip down the storied past of Tennessee Basketball. And, Marvin lived every one of them!

How many here remember the Volunteer Classic? Marvin recalls a "miracle shot" "Go with me now to Stokely Athletic Center, December 18, 1981, Tennessee versus American University, game 2 of the four-team Volunteer Classic, full house, 12,700". westwords

It was an unforgettable Saturday ending for the Food City Center gathering. From a distance, Auburn and Bruce Pearl loved it double. Something bad happened to Alabama and the league championship was finalized for him and his Tigers.

Mashack is one of the hardest working guys in the country. His relentless attacking the ball and defense wears teams down. Watch his play away from the ball on defense, he denies passes, busts through screens and has active hands. He never stops. I wish he looked for more opportunities to score rather than always pass first mind set on offense. It is great to see him get some love for draining a 35 footer to beat Bama at the buzzer. I can hear Joe Dean’s voice with the call, “Mashack from midcourt, …BOTTOM!!

I mean that final minute was an absolute clinic by Mashack:

Out hustles his man on the missed FT, draws the over the back, hits both of his FTs to tie it, keeps his head on a swivel on D and peels off the corner shooter to get the tie up before they can go in-n-out to Sears for a final shot, absolute glue on his man on the inbounds helping force the 5 second violation, then gets the inbounds pass as the third option and beats the buzzer from 40ft while his coach and PG yell for a TO.

Mashack and guys like him are always my favorite players on the team. Flashy players tend to have cold streaks but hustle can be brought game in and game out as long as your healthy enough.

Yep, Mashack cemented his name in Tennessee Basketball folklore. And there's not a better Man on any basketball court. Makes it even sweeter. HE won that game in the last minute of play. Never seen anything like what he did. But there have been other great moments in UT Basketball History, as noted by this article. Some I never knew. Did you read about them?

I prefer to imagine the Legend John Ward's call--- "Bottom". I think John Was the first to coin that phrase.

The story about Gary Carter's heroics are a nice read, I attended that game in Stokely and that spot was across the floor from the Tennessee bench. It was an answer to a game played poorly by Tennessee. Carter was an excellent shooter and a fan favorite from Johnson City.

Saddest part of the story, Gary Carter failed out of school later that month, may have been his last bucket as a Vol, I'd need to dig into the research but he took his medicine, admitted he had not done well in his classes, urged his teammates to pay attention, it can happen.

Rudy Kinard hit a baseline jumper across from the Tennessee bench in 1967 to beat LSU as time expired, Billy Haun did his usual on Maravich, but Pete performed very well, floppy gray socks and all, he was worth the price of admission, twp seats face may have been $5 that season.

Agree. As good a teammate as he is, he seems to be an equally good person off the court. I hope he makes Knoxville/East Tennessee his home when basketball is done.
