Jamai Mashack played a helluva game

He didn’t score a point, but played some of the best one on one defense against a future NBA star that I’ve seen. Held Miller to 15 points on 4 of 11 shooting and had to work his butt off for every bit of it.

Really impressive effort from Jamai.
I thought him and aidoo both played really well defensively! Aidoo blocked I counted 3 shots. Altered more than 7.. but back to your point, mashack needs to be more aggressive when he drives to the rim!! Even in tba you could hear ppl including myself yelling at him to shoot it!! He needs to go up with intensity and authority and quit with this second guessing himself and loosing the ball. He could be nasty in college if the light comes on for him to dunk the damn ball every time he goes down the lane. He could do it. The guy can jump out of the gym.

One of the better games I have seen someone play where the player didn't score.

I think you'll see an offensive jump next year. Josh Richardson is his best comp, IMO.

I’m getting Josh Richardson vibes. If he develops a jump shot, he’ll earn some serious money.
A very good comparison. NBA level athleticism. If he puts in the work on his shot in the off season, he might follow a similar career path. We'll lose a lot off this roster, but we're going to be longer and more athletic next season which will hopefully translate to a terrific defensive team. Just gotta find shooters. No reason he can't be one.

He was a bonafide stud last night. He could be an ALL-SEC caliber player if he just found something, anything offensively this off-season. Whether it’s the ability to attack the basket or an improved perimeter jump shot, just one offensive tool would make him so dynamic. Rooting for him to figure it out.

If he gets both...wow.

Barnes has been good at fixing shots. Do that with Mashack and then combine that with Mashack utilizing his explosion and athleticism to attack the basket...each of those skills would strengthen the other...and wow.

JRich probably is the best recent Tennessee comp, but is far from a perfect one. JRich had offense from day 1, though he didn't play enough as a freshman, nor was he relied upon to really show it. By his sophomore year, he was playing 30 mpg and shooting 47% (8 ppg) while playing elite defense. He was deadly from the mid-range and coukd get to the rim. Those abilities continued and it was as a junior (latter half) that he started to show off his extended range as a 3-pt shooter, and again as a senior when he then added PG duties to his résumé.

Mashack has a ways to go as an offensive player. His ball-handling is still suspect, he can't take his man off the dribble and get to the hoop very often, and his range is still a definite work in progress. The on-ball defense is there, and is what shows flashes of Richardson, but he's significantly behind as an offensive player, still. He has time though, and his defense will still get him minutes.

Mashack was the difference in the game, he frustrated Bama's Freshman Boy-Wonder all night! He should have gotten the game ball!

I think we're much better without Phillips in the game and Aidoo in the 5. Phillips hasn't performed as well as Mashak or Key. ON (who is by far the worst passer on the team) isn't playing near as well as Aidoo, or for that matter, Plavsic (much better passer, better rebounder, defender, and better at the rim). The second-half comeback vs. Mizzou shows we've got the roster to out-match most any team. If we need a big post presence, we've got it. If we need speed and quickness, we've got it. Just need to get the right combo on the court. I think Barnes is figuring it out now that he's seen what all our roster can do in big moments. One more thing--I think Santi is playing too many minutes and that is why he has missed free throws down the stretch at this point in the season. He shot around 90% from the free throw line in the final minutes of games last season.
