Jamai Mashack played a helluva game

I think we're much better without Phillips in the game and Aidoo in the 5. Phillips hasn't performed as well as Mashak or Key. ON (who is by far the worst passer on the team) isn't playing near as well as Aidoo, or for that matter, Plavsic (much better passer, better rebounder, defender, and better at the rim). The second-half comeback vs. Mizzou shows we've got the roster to out-match most any team. If we need a big post presence, we've got it. If we need speed and quickness, we've got it. Just need to get the right combo on the court. I think Barnes is figuring it out now that he's seen what all our roster can do in big moments. One more thing--I think Santi is playing too many minutes and that is why he has missed free throws down the stretch at this point in the season. He shot around 90% from the free throw line in the final minutes of games last season.
Come on, now. The Mashack love affair is about to boil over. He played great, last night, but he isn't Julian Phillips. JP gives you excellent defense AND is at least a threat to score, not to mention one of our best rebounders, FT shooters, and gets to the line (leads the team in FTAs by a wide margin).

Phillips inconsistency has obviously been frustrating. He hasn't exactly been the Kennedy Chandler "star player" replacement we all had hoped for.

But, all that being said, he is still a dynamic talent who can go off for 20-25 points in a given night if he is feeling himself. Mashack cannot do that....yet. This team absolutely needs Phillips playing 30-35 MPG in March, and this team team absolutely needs Phillips to gain some confidence. I still believe this team cannot make a Final Four unless he starts to understand just how talented he is. We'll go as far as Phillips takes us, IMO. Because he is the most talented player on the roster and that is the type of guy you need to step up in the Big Dance.

And he’s a freshman. The light could come on at any time. Kentucky has had a number of 5* freshmen who labored through the regular season, then came on at the end.

Having Mashack as a bench weapon is a luxury, but no, he doesn’t need to be replacing Phillips. We’ll never know what Phillips and/or JJJ would have done on Miller, they are very good defenders in their own right.

If he gets both...wow.

Barnes has been good at fixing shots. Do that with Mashack and then combine that with Mashack utilizing his explosion and athleticism to attack the basket...each of those skills would strengthen the other...and wow.

Well there is a lot of "fixing" he can do tight now!!!!

In the past few weeks, JP has been almost a non-factor. 4 rebounds, 6 pts. vs. UF. 3 reb., 2 pts. vs. AU, 4 reb, 10 pts. vs Vandy, 2 reb, 4 pts. vs. Mizzou. That's avg. 3 reb, 5.5 pts/game avg. Do you think Mashack has not impacted games more than that when he's played the minutes? I think Phillips has hit a wall. That isn't uncommon with Freshmen late in the season. Mashack is having a bigger impact now.

Check the stats. Phillips has not been very productive in the past couple of weeks. Too many turnovers, not much scoring, not many rebounds.

Do you have stats for how well he guards his guy? Production isn't reflected exclusively in the numbers. Multiple players can be involved in steals (and assists and rebounds), but only one is credited. There is no category for altering shots. Or boxing out an offensive player. Or denying an inbounds pass. Or not blowing defensive assignments. JP is a highly productive player.

Okay, so please inform me about how productive Jahmai is on the offensive end. How many points and rebounds did he have last night?

For Phillips, that’s all on 8-15 shooting (53.3%), 6-7 from the FT line, 13 rebounds and only 3 TOs in 85 minutes (21.3 mpg).

Mashack, in that same span plus Bama, is 3-12 shooting (25%), 3-4 from the FT line, 8 rebounds and 3 TOs in 62 minutes (12.4 mpg).

Both are very high-level defenders, Phillips has clearly been the more effective offensive player and rebounder.

What am I missing that gives you the impression that Mashack is having a bigger impact? The difference in the two players, defensively isn’t as great as you seem to believe, and offensively leans decidedly to Phillips.

You said Phillips hasn't performed as well as Key. You can't be serious. Key had two good recent games and that's it. Phillips averages more points, rebounds, and grades better defensively.

Phillips has not had much impact in the last 5 games. Check the stats. Since Feb. 1, Key has outperformed Phillips in every statistical category per minute played except rebounds and that is close. Phillips has only scored more than 6 pts. (10 against Vandy) in one game out of the last 7 So, yes, I am serious. Key's shooting (36% 3pt vs Phillips 25%) spreads the court and puts more pressure on the opponents' defense, he's solid defensively and doesn't turn the ball over as much as Phillips. I think Phillips has hit a wall as a freshman. Maybe he'll get over it, but for now, Key is performing better.

Shack will in my opinion develop offensively and be a helluva player for us.
His passion along with ZZ will serve us well in tourney time and beyond.

Phillips has not been as impactful in the last 5 games as you might think. He's only scored more than 6 pts. one time (10 vs. VU). He has almost twice as many turnovers as steals. Mashack has more steals than turnovers. The team seems to have more energy when Mashack is in the game.

That seems like a stretch to fabricate a truth that isn't really representative of what you're implying.

Phillips has 2 steals and 3 TOs
Mashack has 4 steals and 3 TOs

In other words...big deal. Does that really make either one substantially more effective than the other? Did Mashack's two additional steals in that span make a difference in a win or a loss? And keep in mind, while he has more steals in that span across fewer minutes, his same number of TOs as Phillips have come in fewer minutes, as well. So it could be argued that Phillips has taken better care of the ball on a per minute basis.

Key is the one guy that can come in off the bench and get hot and light a scoreboard up but how many times have we seen it? Not many. He will continue to get opportunities to do that and hopefully it happens more often moving forward. Most nights it want happen and JP is a better option.

It seems you are equating statistical results with impact. I don't think they perfectly correlate. Mashack's Bama game is a great example-- 0 pts but was arguably the MVP. I believe Phillips has an important impact even when he doesn't score. He's a very good defender, demands attention on offense, gets to the line, and is one of our best rebounders. I agree his stat numbers don't look awesome the last few games, but I heartily disagree that he isn't having significant impact. He should go right back in the starting lineup when he healthy.

Another example would be Vescovi. Even when he doesn't score much his IMPACT on offense is huge because of the attention he demands.

I do love me some Mashack. That was the best individual defense I've seen from anyone on any team this year.

Put him on Wallace Saturday.

Let’s just hope Phillips sitting and watching a few games will help his performance when he’s ready to return

Stat that I think highlights Mashack's impact: Brandon Miller averages over 18 per game. Against Mashack, he scored 4 pts. That's a pretty big impact.

Mashack's emergence on offense was a definite bright spit in a tough loss. If he can keep that going, I like our chances going forward.
