Has anyone rented a place in Jamaica outside one of the resorts?

VRBO has some beach/lagoon front villas that look awesome and include a staff. The resorts are cool, but thinking of something different. What are the restaurants/nightlife like (including safety) outside of the resorts in MoBay?

Thanks.

I have not personally. When we traveled to Jamaica it was on a cruise so everything we did was with a group and a guide. The things I've read online about renting a house/villa is that most of the ones in more crowded cities typically have security gates and have a staff which includes a security guard. Some guards even use dogs.

If you stayed around Montego Bay and used general common sense, I think you would be fine.

Whoever you go through could probably hook you up with a good driver that could take you to the good spots and keep you out of too much trouble.

That's what I was thinking.

Only drawback I can see is getting hassled every where you go and on the beach if its "public".

Have you ever been to Jamaica? It's one of the few places I've visited that I have absolutely no desire to go back. Poverty and crime are rampant. I actually had some random woman rush to me as I entered a local watering hole in an attempt to sell me a bite of food from her plate. I went to take a picture of that same bar, and was told I needed to pay for that privilege.

I've been told that the resorts can be great, just don't leave the property.

I've done the resort thing...looking for something different. My wife wants to take me on a cool trip for my 50th in December.

Ditto. The beaches look amazing.

The Jamaica hate is amusing.

A friend of mine got to shoot video for a documentary in Cuba a few years ago, said it was amazing.

I'm with you on the Jamaica hate. I love Jamaica, I wouldn't say its my favorite island but I love going. I like getting away from the touristy areas.

After leaving the port area in Ocho Rios, our group was headed towards town and were met by Jean, Jean the dancin machine mon. He was offering everyone mj for $15. One of the group pointed to his NYPD hat and said he was a cop. Without missing a beat Jean replied, "Oh, police. For you $10, $10!".

Its all in how you look at it. I realize it has its drawbacks, but any of them do. Hell, Atlanta or Nashville have their own drawbacks.

I'm not really going to argue the point because that isn't the point of the thread. I like the country. It suits me. I don't know what else to say.

Yeah, to each their own. Most people I've talked to either love Jamaica or hate it. Most of the people I know that hated it are the type that want to be pampered and they didn't stay at one of the all inclusive resorts. Nothing wrong with it but if that's what someone wants they won't like the real Jamaica experience, better off to stay in a resort or go somewhere else entirely. Personally I've felt more uncomfortable on occasions in New York City and Detroit than I ever have in Jamaica. I wouldn't even put Jamaica at he top of most dangerous places I've been in the Caribbean. We were in Belize when the police station was robbed, the police station! I really like Puerto Rico too but you want to be careful where you go. Wander into La Perla at night and you might have a bad night. Always try not to look like like the typical tourist and look like you know what you're doing, where your going even if you don't. Use common sense and you'll be fine.

Perfectly stated.
