Jamaica VRBO?

it's like $7,000 to 10,000 dollars for a week

I checked on it earlier this year, and I think it's overpriced for what your going to get

That's nuts! That's what it costs for an African safari trip which is notorious for being one of the most expensive vacations you can take.

After leaving the port area in Ocho Rios, our group was headed towards town and were met by Jean, Jean the dancin machine mon. He was offering everyone mj for $15. One of the group pointed to his NYPD hat and said he was a cop. Without missing a beat Jean replied, "Oh, police. For you $10, $10!".

I don't get it. :dunno:

Do cops not smoke weed? Or was the NYPD cop supposed to scare the guy into thinking he was going to be making an arrest?

Its all in how you look at it. I realize it has its drawbacks, but any of them do. Hell, Atlanta or Nashville have their own drawbacks.

I'm not really going to argue the point because that isn't the point of the thread. I like the country. It suits me. I don't know what else to say.

You can't satisfy some of these 'Muricans. Actually, I wish some of these guys would just stay home or just go to Florida. I mean, if all they are going to do is just sit at a resort all week and be around a bunch of other spoiled Americans and eat their all inclusive breakfasts and bottom shelf margaritas, they could do the same thing for a lot less in Gatlinburg, Orlando, or Gulf Shores. But I guess the ability to keep up with the Joneses and one-up your friends on Facebook is more important... just being able to say "I've been to Jamaica" I guess has some value to some.

Meanwhile, the last place you will find me is around a bunch of cockroaches while I am on vacation in another country. I'm going to try to mingle as much as possible with the locals and actually get a unique experience.

Don't let these booboo heads in here rain on your parade. If you like Jamaica, you obviously have your reasons and I can respect that. The rest of these guys can spend a fortune traveling to only drink Bud Lights, eat burgers and chum it up with other 'Muricans 1000 miles away from home.

Yeah, to each their own. Most people I've talked to either love Jamaica or hate it. Most of the people I know that hated it are the type that want to be pampered and they didn't stay at one of the all inclusive resorts. Nothing wrong with it but if that's what someone wants they won't like the real Jamaica experience, better off to stay in a resort or go somewhere else entirely. Personally I've felt more uncomfortable on occasions in New York City and Detroit than I ever have in Jamaica. I wouldn't even put Jamaica at he top of most dangerous places I've been in the Caribbean. We were in Belize when the police station was robbed, the police station! I really like Puerto Rico too but you want to be careful where you go. Wander into La Perla at night and you might have a bad night. Always try not to look like like the typical tourist and look like you know what you're doing, where your going even if you don't. Use common sense and you'll be fine.

This...

I'm just saying.

Most of us are spoiled. And most of us are closed minded and don't have the desire to open ourselves up to other experiences outside of what we are most comfortable and familiar with. It has nothing to do with being a bad a$$. Its just that if I want to spend a week at a resort, drinking Bud Light and margaritas, the same foods I'm used to eating, and talking with other Americans, I could have the same experience here in the states for way cheaper.

I guess I treat a vacation away from the US as an opportunity to see something different and enjoy different experiences. That's just me though.

What are the top things that made it more expensive?

Setting aside the needless social status comments one could find some legitimate points in this post.

We frequent Destin, FL for beach vacations. Gorgeous beaches, it's not a bad drive from Knoxville, it doesn't require a passport, airports and extra fees, we typically rent a house on VRBO(this makes all the difference), and we make it a home away from home. My sister recently took a vacation with a girlfriend of hers to an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic. She said it was nice but in truth there wasn't much going on there that she couldn't have done on a beach in Florida.

I would say this to Volmax, if you're just going to Jamaica for the beach alone then I might think twice. If you're going for the beach and to experience other things in Jamaica then I say go for it.

My favorite is St John or the British Virgin Islands, unless you can go to Hawaii.

I have been to the Bahamas and Jamaica several times in my younger days. Outside the resorts on Jamaica, a 50 year old person will be a constant target of beggars and sales people. I am just not sure what the attraction could be.

Like many of the posts say, you can get in trouble going to the wrong area in any city, but I will say that most of Jamaica is the wrong area, why do you think that every resort is like a drug lord compound.

Hawaii is an excellent trip but beach wise the water is considerably cooler.

+1 for Grand Cayman. Easy flight from Atlanta and one of our favorite vacations ever. The food is very expensive though.....

Seriously, the next time someone in your circle of friends and family tells you about a trip to wherever, ask them why they went. I guarantee you that the best answer they can come up with is "because it is just some place I wanted to go". It's like they are just checking of an item on their bucket list, not a place where they can experience different things and people.

And there is nothing wrong with that. Some folks work in high pressured environments and are constantly making crucial decisions that affect a lot of people. When vacationing they want to go someplace familiar to relax and unwind. A place where the only decision they have to make is how many beers to take to the beach.

That's fine. They don't have to go to Jamaica to do that, however. They could accomplish everything you said above for far cheaper and with a lot less hassle (TSA lines, customs agents, street beggars, etc) in the US.

I go around and tell folks that drive Range Rovers they made a bad choice. I tell them they they could accomplish everything they need in a Tahoe. I'm pretty sure they appreciate my opinion and don't think I'm a condescending prick.

People have the freedom to spend their money how they want. Just because I think it was a choice I wouldn't have made, don't think I saying it is a "bad choice". Its just not a choice that most people feel the need to make.
