Jameel Owens and Stacey McGee

There were no charges against Owens, he may or may not have had anything to do with it. Don't just assume the circumstances and call the kid an idiot, thats classless.

I should re-phrase my comment!

Kids are just dumb in general. He is an idiot for getting in a car! Stay on campus, have fun on your visit, but don't go "out" with that stuff going on. As a recruit....you want to have fun, impress the staff in your meetings, and impress the players on the team. But don't be stupid and do that crap! If he was unaware of the pot untill they got in the car...I can understand that! I'm sorry I said he was an idiot befor knowing ALL the details. My fault. But.........where there is "smoke" usually there is fire.

No disagreement here, but young people do stupid things, I know as well as anyone. One mistake in judgment doesn't make any of the players involved an idiot, however more than one "mistake" is a definite cause for concern. But to call 18 and 19 year olds an idiot for that isn't right, give them a chance to learn and respond from this.

Come on! ALL kids are stupid. I was, you were and everyone on this site was when they were kids.

That is not a slam...it's fact. People make mistakes.......i was wrong and admitted this, but to get in a car "if" you knew what was going on???? Come on! Not very bright. I hope he commits, and no problems are seen for the rest of his career at UT. Kids have to use their heads and know what situations to be in.

These are life decisions that can make or break your future. THINK!

I have a son ready to start the recruiting process. He WILL be informed (and has) about what goes on. Be smart, think, and do the right things. Don't go out!

IDIOT! Do we need someone this stupid anyway?
Jones, Paige definitely stupid, Owens should have never been placed in that situation by his "hosts". CPF should call Jones and Paige into his office and have them call Owen's parents and apologize. Then he should explain to them how ridiculous this makes he and the rest of the staff look, and how embarrassing it makes them feel out on the recruiting trail. Then he should remind them (as if they need it), of Coker. If it's Jones' car, I call his parents and tell them to come pick it up, he doesn't need it. Then if Phil's feeling generous, suspend them 4-6 games next season and some community service, between now and spring ball. kids are kids they make mistakes yadda yadda, higher standards, blah, blah...handle and move on.:salute:

Are we saying players who smoke regularly or now and then when we're talking about percentages? If its just a now and then type thing then I'd say it would have to be at least 65 or 70% like justin said. Judging by the lack of suspensions for failed tests I'd say that players are generally smart about when they do it in order to stay on the field.

I know its a different sport but in 2001 Charles Oakley said at least 60% of the players in the NBA smoke regularly. I know marijuana isn't on the NBA's list of banned substances but I have more common sense than to think players pick it up once they get to the professional level. It's a part of our culture, in every level of employment and especially amongst college students. If I were to be caught in the same circumstances as Gerald, Ahmad, William, and Jameel people wouldn't bat an eye or even know at all because I'm a "typical college student". Yet when another 18,19, 20 year old college student who just happens to carry the pads and the weight of an entire community on his shoulders gets in trouble its a horrible travesty. They're young they made a mistake by getting in a car, but don't be ignorant and think that because they suit up for your mighty Volunteers that these kids are perfect. Having to keep up with school and have a full-time job as a Tennessee football player is more than enough pressure for anyone, not to mention a sub 20 year old on his own for the first time. Remember these are kids, they're students, a lot like myself and a number of other people involved on this board. I'd hate for people that don't know me to be discussing my wrongdoings on a message board like they're some kind of saint. I know as Tennessee fans we hold our athletes in high regard, but don't expect them to be perfect. They have enough with school and athletics to worry about, they don't need us on this board criticizing their character.

Did you guys ever think that the other players and vol-loving cops for that matter made a deal with a high Jameel Owens that if he commits to UT then they'll all say he had nothing to do with it?

it's funny, on the govolsxtra site, they quoted Mcgee after having a conversation with owens on his trip to Knoxville, and the only thing he said was "ah he was like, 'you missed out, you should have come'"....

now we know why.........
