Are we saying players who smoke regularly or now and then when we're talking about percentages? If its just a now and then type thing then I'd say it would have to be at least 65 or 70% like justin said. Judging by the lack of suspensions for failed tests I'd say that players are generally smart about when they do it in order to stay on the field.
I know its a different sport but in 2001 Charles Oakley said at least 60% of the players in the NBA smoke regularly. I know marijuana isn't on the NBA's list of banned substances but I have more common sense than to think players pick it up once they get to the professional level. It's a part of our culture, in every level of employment and especially amongst college students. If I were to be caught in the same circumstances as Gerald, Ahmad, William, and Jameel people wouldn't bat an eye or even know at all because I'm a "typical college student". Yet when another 18,19, 20 year old college student who just happens to carry the pads and the weight of an entire community on his shoulders gets in trouble its a horrible travesty. They're young they made a mistake by getting in a car, but don't be ignorant and think that because they suit up for your mighty Volunteers that these kids are perfect. Having to keep up with school and have a full-time job as a Tennessee football player is more than enough pressure for anyone, not to mention a sub 20 year old on his own for the first time. Remember these are kids, they're students, a lot like myself and a number of other people involved on this board. I'd hate for people that don't know me to be discussing my wrongdoings on a message board like they're some kind of saint. I know as Tennessee fans we hold our athletes in high regard, but don't expect them to be perfect. They have enough with school and athletics to worry about, they don't need us on this board criticizing their character.
