James comes in in the mid 80's and Richardson rated at #99 of 100.

Think it was worth leaving early for Richardson now? He is looking like a mid (3-5) round draft pick. The article quoted Richardson as saying he was about 65% last year with the VOLs.

I am wondering why he didn't stay and get healthier before he left. Injury risk is always there and a mid round pick won't get rich on his first contract for certain.

He suddenly played at 65% once his draft stock crashed.

How could playing one of the toughest schedules in college get you healthier?

Not sure I follow your logic but if he gets drafted and plays in the NFL this year instead of the SEC, than he will deteriorate into nothig then I guess since the NFL is magnitudes tougher than the SEC? So he is done and gone either way is what you are saying?

you don't get rich on your 1st contract in the NFL anyway...you get rich on the 2nd and sometimes 3rd... those $50-60 million dollar contracts for rookies are over...4 years $24 million for the #1 pick this year,$15 in signing bonus...8.5 in salary

I understand your stance OP, but realize no one expects a 3-5 round pick to start right away. Tiny will have a great chance to heal his knees with the help of the top trainers in the world while also getting paid pretty good money to do it. Tiny will also move to RT which should help him some.

Go to team with aging tackles.. Wait and play in a few years and cash in on te 2nd contact

Dude, if someone gave me $24mil, I'd consider myself pretty f'ing rich. You could literally buy 80 $300k Maseratis, or 24 three bedroom condos in Pacific Heights SF with no financing with that money. Not to mention your heart surgeon probably makes...oh, $300k per yr, making that 80x what someone doing your triple bypass (which entails one to be physiologically dead, but artificially alive for about 5-10min) would make. Just for some perspective.

none of this should be a surprise to Tiny at all. I'm sure everyone in UT's fb office told him all the possibilities before he declared. And yes 24 mil is a lot of money to anyone, but he will not sniff that until MAYBE his 4-5th year in the league, assuming he can make it that far

^This! One of the toughest things that can happen to a player is to be a #1 pick, yes the $$ are great, but you get thrown to the wolves immediately and you better produce or else!
Much better if you can have a season or 3 to learn and develop, JMO!

He may not get rich in his first contract but he will still get paid. Why risk coming back and maybe injuring yourself ( he already has knee issues) instead of getting paid to go to the league. In all likelihood he wouldn't help his draft stock enough to justify the extra year.

ok,thats the #1 pick in the draft...8 million a yr for 4 yrs/agent takes 5%...400k gone...
40% in federal taxes...3.2 million per yr...luckily the Texans draft 1st,so no state tax,but you do have to pay taxes in the other states you play in,8 games,5% tax in each,$25k per state, another $200k per year...

so your contract is now is for 4.2 million/yr x 4 years,16.8 million... still a hell of a haul, but not what you think... the #2 pick gets 1.1 million less before taxes,#3 gets $700k less than #2,so on and so on.... and the avg length of service is 3 years... so there is some perspective, its better than 95% of everybody else, but its not the lotto winnings people usually associate with when you see the numbers....you have to make it to the 2nd contract to hit paydirt...

You get rich by making it to the 2nd contract and having leverage.

At this point, I don't think Tiny was ever gonna get a 1st round grade. So he would come back to UT, get paid 0, receive about the same grade and still get paid the same in the NFL. Why not go get your money now and have a chance at the 2nd contact a year earlier?

Ian Rapoport was saying the Dolphins might take James at 19 if Cyrus is gone and the Skins are picking in the 2nd and they are looking at James, Cyrus and Tiny

As a Skins fan, you want Tiny blocking for your QB next year at left tackle? With all his inabilities to stay set till the snap? As a Giant fan, I would love to see the Skins draft him!

Tiny made the right decision. He needs to take care of his family. And the O line is in rebuilding mode

You have somewhat underestimated the income of a cardiothoracic surgeon, but the point still stands. The pay disparity between athletes and the most valuable contributors to our society (physicians and other health care workers, teachers, farmers, soldiers, heck - even utility workers) is downright disturbing.
