i remember a lot of fema fraud during hte l.a. earthquake in the early 90s. FEMA's MO seems to be to throw money at the problem.

just heard a guy from Santa Rosa Co. (Pensacola area) say "the sad thing is, I'd rather have FEMA in charge than BP and the Unified Command (Coast Guard, EPA, etc.)". Trust me, the people of Santa Rosa Co. have no love for FEMA either.

this shizz is f'd on up.

The reality is that the leak itself has been virtually unmanageable and the feds didn't have a solution and could not reasonably be called upon to create one out of thin air. The resulting spill is huge and there is zero chance of capturing all of it. Maybe not even much of a chance to capture a significant part of it.

How the hell someone built a pump with no cut off valve is beyond me.

A lot of people near where I live are being given the run around, yesterday I heard that some of the homeless people from "tent city" were being given checks for $3k though.

Which is nonsense. Excuse me for being harsh but they should at best reimburse them for their tents and move on.

Some reports are coming out that the early Coast Guard responders to the explosion knew the spill would be massive. Makes you wonder why the Feds didn't mobilize sooner.

The after-event review of this probably won't be pretty.

No, can't be. With the exception of plugging a hole a mile deep, everything else seems like it could have been handled much better with some common sense.

Mobilize what?

To do what?

Mobilize what?

To do what?

1. Supplies, equipment, personnel for containment and clean up.

2. Process - streamline approvals, move into command mode and generally clear hurdles to solutions.

BP is clearly the specialist for handling the hole and associated issues. The Fed's could have been better and more quickly prepared to handle booms, shore protection, allow various containment and dispersant strategies.

BP should be in charge of the spill, the Feds can be much more active in limiting the damage associated with the spill. The can marshall resources, use their logistics capabilities to the sites, etc.

So now the BP makes sense...(Big Papa, Butt Plug, British Petroleum)

On another note, has anyone consulted Kevin Costner?
