From today's media session...

"I came in thinking I wanted to take jump shots and be real pretty. I still work on those things, but I can bury guys now."

"We can beat any team. Just making the tournament isn’t enough this year."

"We’d walk into Rupp Arena (last year) and say, ‘OK, maybe we can beat them, but we probably won’t. It’s definitely different this year. We plan on winning in Rupp Arena."

But I still want to see him work on his jump shot. That will be the difference in him being good and great. JMO

The "I can bury guys now" quote is just absolutely great!

He's huge, he can abuse just about any defender in the country because of his size. If he has learned that, that's a scary thought for the Vols opponents.

The continued progression of his jump shot will be a nice addition, but he needs to do the majority of his work in the post.

Remember last season him saying he hadn't adjusted to being able to get away with being physical inside. If he realizes he can this year, watch out.

Jarnell has nice touch on his right and left hooks. He has a nice little running hook. Quick release on his post shots. Good, not great footwork helps him get an advantage. He does a good job of using his body to back his man down. He can pass out of double teams, which really is impressive for a kid his age. He does a good job of positioning himself, though he needs to use his legs more. Three things:

1) He needs to learn either an up and under or a turnaround jumper. He needs a counter move to his hook shots. He has neither.

2) He needs to be quicker with his moves. He got caught too many times with no direction. He has to be decisive and sure about his post game.

3) He needs to finish a little better. He missed some bunnies last year. I believe this was a struggle because of his age/not use to playing such high competition. I'm not worried about #3.

Big thing is decisiveness of his moves. As ZJC said lots of times he caught it and wasn't sure, and by the time he decided it was too late or the double had come already. I expect this was because of coming straight from high school, kind of expected, so im not all that worried about it.

A little up and under or even just use of a shot fake would be lethal, still think ft shooting will be huge for him though.

I just hope he works on the FT, because hell be living at the line this year.

If he would work on just shooting the ball instead of getting Carmello's ft style down to perfection, then I think he would be a lot more consistent. Seriously though, if he's putting the work in the gym like being reported, then I can see a jump from around 50% to 70% this year.

You honestly could be onto something here, I wish he'd realize he's not melo haha. Be himself and he'd benefit much from him much more IMO, their games aren't even close to similar.

I'd think the same about the fr shooting since he's always in the gym. Unfortunately, he shot in the 40% range from the line in the FIBA games this summer. Every game he was leaving between 3-5 points at the line.

No reason for a guy shooting a higher fg% than ft%.

So Stoked!

We just have to survive football season, first!

Lol, j/k. FB is the real deal. I'm still pumped to see Stokes in action again, though.

Either way, you gotta love the positive attitude this kid has and is hinting the whole team seems to have going into this season. Attitude is half the battle!

And the other half is knowing? That's it? Guns don't factor anywhere in the battle at all??

He will get fouled a lot. If he can make the FTs opponents will have to back off. With Maymon, Hall, Yemi and Jarnell muscleing in down low we should get a lot of FTs. I hope he works on that part of the game.
