My comparison for J.Small is Pig Howard.

He is very shifty, has above average acceleration with slightly below average top end speed. That's why he has so many of those 30 to 40 yard runs.

His first cut is one of the best in college football though!

I mean both of those options are on the shorter side but that’s the end of the comparison. DY was like 5’8” 170 and couldn’t fight through a tackle. You’re severely underrating Jabari. He’s a little taller but 30-40 pounds heavier and much tougher to bring down on first contact. No he doesn’t always break long runs but he’s a hell of a lot tougher to bring down than Young was.
He gets first downs.

Small is a good player who does all of the little things right, and he almost always gets what is there. Wright is more explosive, and is now also doing all of the little things right, which is why he earned the starting spot. Small isn’t some bum he’s averaging 6.2 yds per carry so far this year.
If the "little things" don't include pass protection then I agree

IMO what's most amazing about J Wrights 9.3 YPC is he doesn't have a 60 or 70+ yard carry. Usually when a guy is averaging close to 10 yards a carry there is one run in there that is very long to pump the average. His longest is 31 this year. So, he is very consistent and had a long of 83 last year, so he has the Homerun in him. He just looks so dynamic this year. I think he has really put in the work this Summer. GBO

Wright has become very good at being patient, setting up his blocks and using his cutback lanes. His strength and vision have been what’s separated him from the other guys so far IMO.

Maybe he can punt.

Back in my day, any player could punt at any time. We'd slip the pig hide out of the speakeasy on first down and the flea back would give it the old boot, see, and we'd pin those palookas back at their own 40 holding the poke. Of course, they'd punt it right back at us so we'd be the patsies and our squeezes would be so bored watching this applesauce they'd take off with some rake with a pocket full of sawbucks. Ah, those were the days!

You are correct. Small has been a blessing and has gotten better each year.
Buutttt, does he give anyone else Devrin Young vibes? It's like he tries so hard sometimes that he forgets to stay upright. In so many cases where he should break off a long TD or gainer, someone will hit him with an arm and he goes straight down. It's almost like an expectation that he's getting tackled, so he just goes with it. It's like he's nearly elite with a load of long gainers, but something always happens. Remember him falling untiuched v LSU on a possible TD. Saturday 1 arm to shoulder stopped a long TD.

Devrin Young was that way. Would fly up in kickoffs but 1 hand touch and he'd go rolling. Jabari runs super hard, hits with all his small frame can, has a sick dead leg move. But, I just think he has a mental expectation of being tackled on every play that has kept him from being a superstar.

Just my $.02 after 3 years of watching. Here's to this post aging horribly starting Saturday.
I don't think it's balance, I think it's vision, patience and an unwillingness to improvise. Small will run headlong into a non-existent hole for a 2 yd gain over and over again. He'll do it all game if he has to. Refuses to bounce outside ever unless an outside run has been called.
