And are you pretty sure you can do this and pass inspection sticker for street legal, or are you fine with just having a hunting camp jeep? Check in to it.

I agree, yes the 4.0 L six is a proven power plant.

The 4.0 is a great engine. The only logical reason for the swap would be familiarity with the LS engines. If you're stuck out in the middle of nowhere, an old carbed LS-1 like you've been working with for years can be comforting should something go awry.

Then there's the illogical reasons like that sound of that great V-8.

Isn't the stock 4.0 an inline six? Seriously, I don't understand the lure of going for a small block V8 instead of going stock with mods.

I have a 2.5L I4 in mine. I want to move up to the I6 when or if mine gives out. Mine is plenty stout

The only issue with 4.56 axle ratios is you are gonna be turning some revs at highway speed. 4.11 might be a better compromise.

It would, if he was only going to run stock tires. I just assumed that if he was moving up in engine, there was a reason behind it other than the purr of a V8.

If he moves up in tire size, then his gear ratio will decline at the axle. When I went up from the stock 27" tire to the 33" tires I have now, my stock 4.11 gear ratio dropped down to 3.54. So I had to go up to 4.88 in the axles to get my gear ratio back to 4.12. Burns a little more gas, but I now have 5th gear back and I'm not running in 3rd gear everywhere.

Tire size change wasn't considered by me, you are correct.
