Just looking at the thread titles makes my head hurt after this game.

listen, i don't like losing, but good greif this team played today like they have all year long. hot and cold from behind the arc, no defense and missed a ton of buckets underneath. it was th same thing on Sunday. we've seen it all year long. i don't know why some of you are acting so pissed of....it's like your completely surprised at what you saw today.

as for bruce or wayne or anyone else we're laying blame on this afternoon, i really don't care.

the truth is this team did about all it was actually capable of.

but as for bruce, i'm not going to pretend that he's the best thing since sliced bread, but we've been to 4 straight NCAA's under him, back to back sweet 16's and won the SEC E twice and the reg season c'ship.

it's not been all bad, hell, bad isn't even a word i would use in any description of the job he's done here, given the state of the bball program when he got here. and he owns florida.

so, it sucks. they didn't play well, they didn't play well Sunday. but they were what they were. expecting something new that translated in to a deep run in the tourney this season just wasn't ever evident at any point in the season. today was no different.

move on to next year and this team loses some folks, but brings back a bunch of players, plus still have some incoming folks that lookto contribute as well, and this program doesn't seem to be going anywhere any time soon.

and there's no arguement whatsoever that this bball program is in significantly better shape today than it was 5 years ago.

GO Vols.

Now that's what I would call "fair and balanced."

good post, i agree, but i think we expected more from the talent all year, and today was just the culmanation of everyone's frustration.

When did making it to a 64 teamed NCAA tournament become a success?

After spending so many years NOT making it. I'd rather be in the tourney with a chance to win, than on the couch merely salivating about it.

that, i would agree with. i dont' think anyone expected that we'd struggle so badly in the glaring spots we did. offensively we never "got it", had no identity, and defensively...ugh. but, in the end, we made it to the c'ship game in the SEC tourney and made the AA's.

i just remember when there were NO expectations for this program. at this point, i'm happy to be disappointed, where as before, i simply didn't care.

This team did do about as well as it could. You can't coach quickness and we had none out front. Ramar got kicked off the team and West did not get cleared to play so I think Pearl did about as well as he could. I hope we get some guards and next year should be an improvement. This season late both Hopson and Tatum showed some signs of good things to come. Disappointed yes, but glad to be making the tourney on a regular basis after long dry stretches. GO VOLS!

Amen Jake... Bruce will find us a pg and a shooter in the offseason and all will be well next year on Rocky Top.

We have "Talent" yes, but we had "egos" too. We had Chism wanting to take the spotlight, and we had Tyler who was supposed to be the leader. We had Hopson who apparently had never faced real competition a day in his life, came in trying to be Mr. One-And-Done. We had Bobby Maze who did a good job at getting his act together and quitting the bad guy, let's get a technical and cause problems deal. We had J.P. who still hasn't realized he's really not that good and that he needs to quit playing stupid. But then we had Tabb, who really stepped up and did a good job when needed. We had Brian Williams who has fought for his minutes, and grew a lot this year.

We have a 5 star point guard lined up for 2010. Next year, I dont' think Bobby did a bad job at all running point for us. It was DEFINITELY not as bad as last year. We're going to be okay. I honestly think with this finish, Tyler and Wayne will stay one more year, and use their eligibility, and I honestly think this will help the Vols tremendously. They just need to grow up and that takes time.

this team did exactly what it was capable of doing considering what they lost from last year....even in a weak SEC....with that being said....the lack of intensity from this team is what was most frustrating to the fans.....i.e......Ole Miss...KY (twice).....AL....MS St (SEC Championship)....effort and hustle are not God given talents....it comes from within....something of whichthis team lacked alot....heart....better luck next year...we'll see.....

This team did not do all it was capable of.

debatable, but one thing is for sure....if they are capable of more, they sure didn't show it on a consistent enough basis for it matter.

I agree with the poster above, hopson and tatum i think can develop in to productive guards. I'm still interested to see how negedu and williams continue to develop....though i could do w/out the williams' tantrums when a call doesn't go his way....that said, there's a good nucleus there. they have to learn better defense, and establish and identiy offensively.

someone has to come in and play the point much more effectively as well. Maze and Tabbl were ok at times, but neither offered the consistency needed when i look at other PG's at top level teams.

Translation:

Our point guard play was not as bad as last year.
Wayne And Tyler Will Stay
EVERYONE on that team just needs to grow up and get hungry and focused and learn to want to win. If you haven't read Doyle's column on CBS, it describes it. Satisfied, content laid-back players. Not like the under-rated, passed-over, overlooked players of Bruce Pearl's first 2-3 years here.

How does one know if a team is more capable of more than what they accomplished over the course of a 35ish game season. I am a believer in you are what your record is.

Same thing with "this team has talent". I'd love to read an explanation of what those touting this team's talent, define as talent. Because I don't see a lot of things I consider basketball fundamentals (talent, to me). Talent is not how fast you can run and how high you can jump or how long your arms are.

I agreed with most everything Doyle said (for once). Except the part about Maze getting after it on D. If our backcourt does not make huge strides in the offseason, we will be in the same spot this time next year. On the bus home.

While much of your post is true, its very frustrating to watch a team lose games because of a lack of heart and intensity.

This was definitely the most underachieving team of Bruce's tenure thus far at UT.

same here. but i think most of us, self included, had higher aspirations for this team coming in to the season. in a down SEC with a core of players off last year's team coming back, pluse guys that got a lot of PT last year, it was frustrating to watch Prince suck out loud at times, or watch chism be a star one game and a no show the next.

i think we saw some guys show "flashes" of what they can be capable of...Tatum, Hopson, Chism and even Tyler Smith to a point....but none of them were consistent enough, and that's the key for this team this year, for it to translate in to anything other than what we got at season's end. This team turned out to only be capable of giving itself a chance to win....nothing more.
