It's pretty normal in college. Kids will gladly work for free if it means they get a good recommendation or their name out in public.
Times have changed man. I'm in the business, and a lot of kids are wising up about their artistic worth. I write orchestral music, and have had to deal with this kind of stuff. The amount of time and energy spent composing or film producing are VAST. Think about it, this kid had to plan out this thing way in advance, go through the processes and paperwork of filming NCAA stuff, set up studios, film, tear down everything, edit, edit, edit, edit, present it, and handle a college semester's worth of schoolwork.
This student may very well get a bump with this series, but to juggle all that with no monetary compensation is crazy. I hope they're getting class credit or something, that would at least give them some kind of substantial dividends. And I'm not knocking the film at all, it's great, and I can't wait to see more. That's why I'm concerned. This is good stuff, not just someone dragged off the street. They will learn, just hopefully sooner than later.
