Why aren't they finalized?
Here's the deal. Grades are posted online. Up until some date--Monday the 20th, I believe--the profs can log back in to the online grade posting system and change any grade for any reason.
It would be rare for them to do this; most professors hate grading papers, and are eager for the semester to be closed up. They might put off the grading, but once they do it they're ready to be done until January.
The only reason a professor would go in and change a grade would be if a student somehow caught a grading error, or was allowed to turn in late work, or something like that.
The university is being weird about this, no doubt about it.
Maybe with potential further NCAA penalties looming UT is just playing it EXTRA safe at this point so there are no questions about it in the future.
Don't know about the 'AA or SEC, but NAIA made me wait until the semester had ended. So I couldn't play in any games until Christmas break had officially started.

Exactly. Tomorrow's game is a good opportunity for a big win, but we're not doomed if we lose. I'm looking ahead to the SEC schedule. We're going to need quality depth and a physical presence for those games.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Tennessee forward Jeronne Maymon will not play for the Vols Saturday at Pittsburgh, although he has passed the necessary number of classes.
Maymon still has to wait for a five-day grace period to elapse on Tuesday before he is allowed to play, according to multiple sources close to the University.
While the grace period is largely a technicality, University of Tennessee academic officials are insisting the Vols honor it. Sources speculate the UT administration is exercising extreme caution in light of the ongoing NCAA investigation centering on the basketball program.
Maymon, a transfer from Marquette, will likely play his first game at Tennessee Tuesday, when the Vols host Oakland.
