Ok, here's another one. This guy was 35-20 his first two years as a head coach anywhere. His 1st year at a big time school was 13-17 (5-11), 2nd year was 14-15 (6-10). Since then he's won 20+ games every year, 4 conference championships, 2 conference tournament championships, 9 straight NCAA tournaments, and 2 national championships.
If we start playing, "your example now my example" you're going to run out of coaches a long time before I do. Actually we can change the game to "Your example my 10" and I'll still have a long way to go when you are through w some outliers.
Like saying..."let me give you an example...one qb is from a big ten school who struggled to even win a starting job in college and was chosen in the 5th rd and another won the heisman trophy and was drafted in the first rd but never did anything. Therefore choosing 5th rd qb's is better than 1st rounders"...
That's somewhat my point. People gripe about what Martin has or has not done, and that we should've gone after a proven coach. I've provided two here, and a couple more in another thread of those "proven coaches", and they all started out unproven and crappy. Martin has started out better, and has shown he's able to get better. This year was better than last, without a key component to his team, beat UK worse than any UT coach ever, undefeated against Donovan, and should be dancing this year. He took a mid major to a 30s RPI and got snubbed there. The guy can coach. End of story.
Not really...you're saying that because these other coaches succeeded after few yrs you'd be ill advised to discount them based on this evidence when the truth is you'd be right 10x for every one you were wrong if you did just that.
His team was picked 4th, just behind #3 mizzou...the league esp middle to bottom was worse than expected which made things easier and not having maymon made things tougher. Given that where we finished tied f 5th just ok. To say the jury is not out or that it's a simple fact that he is a very good coach seems silly. And that is not saying that he is highly unlikely to succeed at UT.
How about showing me someone that says we aren't in the discussion?
We may be I wqs just questioning it. I personally dont think it looks good. We, at best, are right on the line and you know as well as I do that there will be conference upsets that result in some conferences getting two bids when they should really only have one. Weve been lucky so far but things never go exactly how theyre supposed to.
Look im a fan same as you. I hope we get in. We juat have differing views on Martin
Jimmy dykes loves us. Just said we'd be in)))
Yep. He specifically mentioned tennessee's good wins against top 50 rpi and their strong finish down the stretch along with their overall resume. He said he'd put the vol's resume up against at least six teams currently in the field. He said losing to Bama was a lost opportunity but said don't count the Vols out on selection Sunday. Said he disagreed with lunardi for keeping TN out.
