And the New Testament was written well after he died, too.
Matthew - 5 yrs
Luke - 20 yrs
Mark - 30 yrs
John - 60 yrs
Approximate years after death those books written. Really no different than if close friend of Reagan or Kennedy decided to write a book about him. There'd be plenty of people still alive to dispute or discredit
the book if it was inaccurate.
Where did you get these numbers? There is scholarly debate about the length of time between Christ's death and the penning of the Gospels, but there is universal agreement that the order of writing was Mark, Matthew, Luke, John. In fact, the authors of Matthew and Luke likely used Mark as a source.
I was about to post the same thing. I don't think I've seen even the most conservative numbers for the time frame place Matthew only 5 years later.
Because we are all Puritans at heart and think somehow that sex is sinful, even in a marriage. Since Jesus was a sinless person, he would have to be a virgin and not driven by the same lusts as everyone else.
Also, if he was married, then that leaves the possibility of an heir (ala, The Da'Vinci Code), which, unless the heir was semi-divine, that would put into question the whole fully man, fully God issue.
Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it and would put it down as Jesus experiencing all the pain of the world along with the rest of us.
