Jim Calhoun Just Dropped the Hammer

The women make $1m a year for their tv rights and bball is the primary reason IMG signed a $80 mil ten year contract. Bball is also why Nike signed them. They got over 10 mil in cash alone with that contract. Football is still considered new there and just an afterthought

I get all that, but 1MM is chicken feed in the big sports realm and much of that Nike contract goes to the coaches.

Basketball programs make good money, but it's not typically big money without some sort of huge title driving apparel sales.

No, ten million+ went to the school, not Calhoun. Assuming the men make as much on their tv contract, we're already approaching four million without anyone buying a ticket, coke or tshirt. It's not that far off

That's a different animal. Calhoun just mentioned what they bring in, not the bottom line. Either way I'm guessing Comcast pays more than a million for the men's games and we haven't touched a single sponsor yet

well, I just got on my computer. To answer, TVA's question first, an out of state scholarship bballer sees right at $44,500 in that earning. That's the estimated total cost of tuition, fees, books, room and board, etc. An instate scholarship bballer sees just over $26k. Not a bad gig for a college basketball player either way.

Still searching for the Comcast fees. I have discovered that between men's and women's basketball, plus football, UCONN is 80% self supporting in their athletics program, per uconn's website.

Morning news, channel 2 in nashville did the story this morning. Uconn made 7.5, tennessee on the other hand made a whopping 11.4 last year.

was it UCONN basketball alone, or just athletics in general?

I'm not doubting you in the slightest, it's just there is roughly 3,927 different ways to come out with totals and I wonder how they figured it.

My understanding was that it was mens basketball alone. Pretty sure that was the case.

it's a ridiculously combative and self-serving point to be making in that context, but a valid point nonetheless. Still, as C. said, he could bring that up elsewhere or in the midst of a different discussion.

He's a freelance journalist though, probably just working on a bigger story that 'forces' him to ask leading questions like that. Shoddy regardless.
