Jim Tressel or John Wooden: Which one was more corrupt?

Question (honestly don't know) -

How much did Wooden actually know and turned a blind eye to vs. how much did he just never want to know and ignored the situation completely?

I don't think there's any way Wooden didn't know what was going on with Sam Gilbert and his players.

of course he knew. you trying to tell me a guy who teaches his players how to tie their shoes properly doesn't notice them driving cars they can't afford?

I don't doubt he knew. There's not way he could not have.

I'm just wondering how much he actually knew or if he tried to keep himself as distant from it as possible.

That's the part that irritates me the most. All the crap about the fundamental basketball and the pyramid of success, etc.

There is also the fact that he had 16 seasons as a head coach without a title, then coincidentally reeled off 10 in the next twelve years. It is much the same as Barry Bonds only hitting 40 homers twice in 13 seasons, then starting in 2000 hit in the upper 40's 5 straight years including the 73. I guess the Wizard just suddenly had an epiphany.

he had an epiphany that he needed to start landing the big time players to start winning big time. living in LA it's amazing how head in teh sand people are about wooden. i've met ucla fans that have never heard of sam gilbert. it's pathetic.

Its just as bad here in Indiana where he grew up and went to school. I acknowledge he was a great basketball coach. But people here refuse to acknowledge how much he was willing to break the rules in order to get the best players.

This board has a weird hatred for wooden . He wasnt pals with Gilbert. I'm sure he knew, but wasn't an advocate for cheating.

The same people who say calipari is clean blast wooden. A little hypocritical.

I just dont see how wooden is corrupt for some rich use latching on.

Did it help land talent yes, but wooden and Gilbert weren't buddies. Wooden didn't seek out the guy.

I have met cal fans that claim to know a lot about finance, but didnt know variable annuities are different from fixed annuities.

I don't think Cal is clean, but he also isn't overly pious, and he isn't pretending his success has been a result of ensuring his players can tie their shoes.
