Jimmy Cheek made the call

No, I don't mean it like that by no means. I have no problem with diversity. All I'm saying is that has been Cheek's sole focus. The thing I do like is his push for a top research institution. This has nothing to do with anything, just venting.

Bottom line is administration at the very top is terrible. Blame has to go on DiPietro too for hiding since he has been hired

Don't disagree. Frankly, the AD just needs to be more capable of making decisions that better rep the University or simply directly answerable to them without the Chinese Wall.

The AD didn't even report to anyone on campus until a few months ago, but rather directly to the president's office. And since that chair has been warmed by an endless series of toothless gladhanders, general fsckups, and lame-duck interim seatwarmers, the UTAD has essentially answered to nobody but the boosters forever. If this decision and even the hamfisted way it was handled mean that that's coming to an end, I'm all in favor of it.

If you want to be a top research institution you better get used to international students. That's part of being a top research institution: bringing in and mixing in methodologies from other places.

I think the issue people have is the lack of accountability from the Chancellor of UT, Mr Cheek. Pearl is gone, rumor is Hamilton will be in a few weeks who was primarily acting on behalf of the Chancellor and the donors.

What do you mean by "accountability"? The man's the chancellor of the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee. It's squarely within his job description to dump the basketball coach. If the president doesn't like the way he handled it, he can dump Dr. Cheek. If the Board of Trustees doesn't like the way the president handled it, they can force his resignation. We're talking about the coach of a college basketball team; this is the way it's supposed to work.

You may want to take a look inside Japan's research institutions.

Would you be willing to have ultimate say over which is the white team in each game, so we'll know who to pull for? Would be grateful.

Jimmy Cheek has done nothing to this university but preach diversity. If he could have it his way we'd have all international students, blacks, jews, and a terrible athletic program. Our new president Joe DiPietro has done jack $hit since he got the job. The university as a whole's administration. Big Orange Screw... sorry, student just venting here

God forbid we become diverse! Sorry I offended you by coming to UT. I missed the memo UT was an all white school.

Apparently I wasn't supposed to go to or graduate from UT by being of Jewish heritage. Is it just Jews you have a problem with or is it all non-Christian religions? What about Muslims, atheists, agnostics, Buddhists, etc? For that matter what about other minorities: Japanese, Chinese, Eastern Indians, Vietnamese, etc? Should they stay out too? You can say that's not what you meant by it all you want but the fact remains you said it.

I could be wrong, but I feel like everyone missed Ohiovol09's point. I don't know what Cheek's priorities are, but I don't think Ohiovol09 was trying to say he wants an all white school.

Probably not . . . but it's hard to go for the save once somebody posts about "blacks and Jews".

My idea of accountability would be him cleaning out his desk the same time as Hamilton, if it is true he's basicly calling the shots behind closed doors with Haslam. Hamilton is basicly the fall guy for a lot of bad decisions they made, is how it is perceived.

I'm with you. He absolutely should drive the train and when he pushes something idiotic, like Hamilton's getting out in front of the firing, he should eat his share of the bewildered stares.

Any university that would sack its chancellor over the PR fallout from the firing of a basketball coach should just cancel classes, refund the students' tuition, and send letters out to all the alumni asking them to set their degrees on fire.

I realize this is a sports-centered site, but the lack of perspective people have about sports as it relates to the rest of the university is still astonishing.

According to reports he and Haslam had as much to do with the current state of the UT Athletic Dept as Hamilton if not more. You familiar with the cliche, the buck stops here? Well, that's where it should stop, at his desk. :twocents:

The UTAD has only reported to Dr. Cheek's office since July. The current sorry state of the UTAD far predates his oversight.

Since Jim Haslam is by far Tennessee's most important booster, Hamilton has had to ask his permission to go to the bathroom his entire time in Knoxville. This is not news.

You can get mad at Hamilton, you can get mad at Haslam, you can get mad at the NCAA, you can get mad at Aaron Craft. But the simple truth is that there's only one man really responsible for this fiasco.

And that man happens to have the 4th best career winning % among all active coaches with 5 years experience. There's the rub.

That's going to be suspended for a season if not more.

That's going to, had he been retained, get the University of Tennessee hammered with sanctions.

Sure, keep him
