Doesn't say that's where he will coach thou

All the money he can spend , the best players just keep coming , regular trips to the dance , and his teams are breaking NCAA records . I know i'd be gone for something else that might work out .

I don't get why everyone is so animate about cal not wanting to leave memphis... It is freaking Kentucky Basketball... Its like landing the Notre Dame, or Texas HC job in football. There is a ton of history, great fan base, I'm not sure of the facilities (I'm sure Memphis has better ones, but they play in a freaking NBA arena). Plus, its the SEC, not C-USA.. I'm sure he'd like a crack at having a challenge during the regular season, not just in March. I just don't think him taking the job is that far fetched...

Although he is a pretty big baby about playing OOC games against UT and Pearl

It's not far fetched but that prestigious NBA gig probably didn't increase his desire to coach at a so called "elite" job. Firing Billy Clyde after two years also will probably cause new coaching candidates to think twice about accepting their job.

Challenge during the regular season? Not lately in the SEC.

SEC schedule > C-USA schedule.

I know very little about Cal off the court... Would he be considered a Billy Gillespie type as far as not wanting to schmooze the fan base, and shake hands?

Cal loves the fan base. He is very involved in the city and most everyone likes him.

As for him leaving, there would only be two reasons he would do it. The challenge of a new school and the Kentucky "lore." Money and facilities would not come into play as Memphis has taken care of him pretty well.

1) My sense is that he thinks he can succeed no matter where he coaches (and he probably could).

2) Would you rather be King of the city of Memphis or King of the state of Kentucky?

....the Kentucky "lore."

Not trying to down Memphis here, but, I would think that would be enough to lure him away.

I'm interested to see what happens here. I think a hire such as Cal would be a great addition to the SEC. Plus I'd like to see he and Bruce against one another every season:)

King of Memphis, but you would have to get rid of Mayor King Willie Potato Head.

Cal wants to win a championship. He is closer to doing that at Memphis than he would be in rebuilding Kentucky.

UK can't offer better BB facilities and perks than what Memphis has. If you think so, you haven't been to the Finch Center, FEF, seen the charter plane or bus. They would be equal at best. Compensation would be close to his already $3.5 million package unless they offered Nick Sabanesque crazy money.

The kicker. A woman in the UK athletic department in charge of compliance was involved in the UMass investigation back when she worked at NCAA.

Cal is the King of Memphis. Mayor Potato Head is despised by the TAXPAYING citizens of Memphis. If literacy tests were required to vote, Potato Head would be running a crackhouse instead of being Mayor. He's won last 2 elections with 38% of the vote.

Cal would win in a landslide as everyone in Memphis loves him.

Lots of heavy chatter about Cal remains. It is hard to imagine him making the move but some of those higher ups in the Lex media insist that he is interested.

Which is exactly why I posted this.....

Not sure he can bring thugs and 1&Done's to Kentucky like he could at Memphis.

What is there to do in Lexington but drink & watch the grass grow?

Memphis has an active nightlife.

Im trying to understand this. I understand the one and done part, but it's the "thug" part im having trouble with. Who on this team is a thug? Please, help me out on this.

I wouldn't classify it as "thuggery", but Dorsey and Dosier had their share of "incidents".

Cal's won big in Memphis and his reputation has an asterik - he's the best coach in a dead league. It's like Todd Helton not getting full credit for his achievements becuse he played in Colorado.

Now if Cal wins big at UK - that makes him a legend and punches his ticket to the hall of fame.

With that said - Cal would be a fool to leave Memphis for anything less than the keys to Ft. Knox.

Among people who know basketball, making the Final Four at a wasteland like UMASS makes him a legend and ensures his induction into Springfield and Kansas City.

I guess Jim Larranaga has his ticket to fame punched too.
